"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

One of our hoop coops has a tarp roof high point 3 inches higher than next set of bars, tarp pulled over this frame and anchored. Rain still pools in the spaces seen. You'd *think* water would pour right off the hoop shape no? I did. :gig

This coop we used a tarp roof. Tilted whole roof a lil bit, Pulled tarp taught and stapled down. No water pools, runs right off.

Great examples! The more support you add underneath, the better

So maybe just one big slant, instead of two slants? And what is your opinion on my husband's idea to put a few slits in it? He is convinced he is right but I want to hear from someone with more experience. LOL

He is NO handyman!!

I am no expert, just learning by experience. I have not had problems with slats anchored taut. I mostly use anchors, like for tents and if the tarp isn't long enough, I put rope through the tarp grommets and anchor the rope. Here are some examples of using the tarp. When I finish the new coop, since it will be under the shelter, I won't tarp the chickens anymore. PS I would not put slits, a hard rain will pour through and open the slits. I just wouldn't do that.

I actually custom wrapped 1/2 of the bunny hutch and secured with zip ties then made a slanted tarp roof over all of it. That gives them plenty of breeze in the summer but also not open area, then I lower the roof tarp to protect all of the hutch in the winter.

I found a site that sells heavy tarps cheaper than even Lowe's or Walmart. They are custom tarps. You choose the color and the size. My yellow tarps have held up better than my blue ones from Lowe's. I am a tarp girl. Lol.

I rigged the original part to not sag (yarn fixes everything!) so now I'm just going to somehow work on that top part. I'm glad I didn't let him make those slits. I'm thinking of just buying another lid from tractor supply. I saw one that is a roof with a point. I can just put it right on top of the other one. That way they will stay dry, have shade, and still won't be able to fly out! http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/kennel-roof--cover-kit-10-ft-x-10-ft?cm_vc=-10005 I feel like spending the extra money would make for less headache later. Might have to use the credit card so that he doesn't notice the cost as quickly and fuss me for spending MORE money on the chickens!

Slits? Where? I wouldn't cut tarps. Wind and hard rains will abuse it and tear it or make a hole and shred it . We try to have some hanging over edges as well to let water run off outside of sheltered areas so it stays dryer

Thanks everyone!! On a side note, this is the first night that the chickens are sleeping outside in the coop. I'm terrified hahaha. It was also super difficult to get them in there! I had to chase them around and put one in the coop and close it while chasing another! For all seven chickens! I hope it isn't like this every night.
