"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

That's too funny TD. :)
I'm thinking of going with the below ground pool(heated). I here "Cluckers SatTV" has good service and lots of great programming. Every Saturday morning "How to Eat Worms Using Chicken Manners" comes on at 9:00 a.m. Which is highly educational for the newly hatched. Daily at noon "A Brooder Primer for Expecting Hens" comes on. "What to Expect When I Lay My First Egg" is also a good one. The late show comes on at 10.00 p.m. long after the chicks are tucked in. It's called "Predator Eyes" a half hour long program on predator evasion tactics followed by a highly graphic horror film called "A Trip to the Butcher". A dark comedy with a bad ending that's rather gruesome. It ruffles a few feathers, gets a cackle out of the hens and throws the cocks into an uproar. :)

Thank you for the compliments, highly appreciated. I'm glad you approved of the tin application. I figured it'd be sufficient ventilation but good to hear it from you also.
Yea, I've put a lot of time and thought into the coop not to mention I've spent a good bit more than I anticipated and I'm not through yet. But I'm on the downhill side. :)

I'd love for you to drop by next time your in town. Your always welcome and that goes for anyone else in the LA. thread. :)

Cody
It's looking great Cody. Maybe I'll take you up on your offer to visit sometime. Where are you located? I'm in Haughton outside of Bossier.

I had to postpone my building last week due to the rain but the fellow is coming tomorrow to finish my coop and make my horizontal waterers in 5 gallon buckets.

The RIWs chasing me down for treats when I just want a few pictures! :D

I'm still here, not going anywhere. Busy with kids, home coming, and animals. Seems I tore the ACL,PCL, MCL or meniscus of my right knee, and that's my good leg. So my trips to the coop is limited to when my knee is not swollen. Wont know for sure until MRI comes back. Perfect timing, Now I have to rely on the kids afterschool to help feed and water everyone Makes me dread going to work, the plus side is sitting and watching the chickens in the coop something about sitting there is relaxing and makes you forget about everything else.

I am not completely winter ready. My last batch of Golden Cuckoo Marans, Buff Orpingtons, and LF Cornish for the year are in the incubator due to hatch soon, lamps are not set up, and still haven't picked up any water warmers...

I've been invaded by Owls, we've had two for the last couple of years, now it looks like we have four or six staying in our trees....The are huge standing I know at least 2-1/2 to 3 feet tall and I am not exaggerating My basset hounds would not even bark at them when they landed 10 feet from them. Thats when I realized how big they really were. I was letting my roosters free range, then noticed feathers missing, and they choose to sleep in the coop instead of on top of it which is their favorite place to roost. At first I could not figure out why they went into the coop to sleep all of sudden they stopped roosting up high. Now I know why..

The bassets were sitting down, the owls landed 10 feet from them and their heads were equally as tall from the ground up as the dogs. They are probably barn owls, why they choose our trees, well I guess its the food outside, cats, rabbits, and chickens. I don't have the heart to run them off, so for now no free ranging till I put nets up. Five cats have come up missing, first one went amiss, then a week later two more disappeared. A month later, two more vanished., I haven't figured out where they went, We are. down to six cats who help with rodent control. (Yes they are fixed, I do not need anyone cats.). My daschunds don't even want to stay outside when its nice. The go out the doggie door and a few seconds later, they are back inside. I guess the owls have everyone upset.

Opossums have even invaded, Found one guinea with its head missing, I watched my neighbor run one out of his barn, next thing I knew my dogs went nuts one night, I found one on top of the four wheeler in the garage, A few feet from my chick brooder cages full of hatchling white guinea's, and LF orpingtons, Ameraucana, and Auracana's, Not too happy about the nighttime visitor. No causalities or fatalities yet.....

Now its every night and I don't think its the same opossum , there is one I know is at least 10 lbs, it runs and hides every time I turn the light on, I cant even get out the door fast enough to shoot it before it disappears into the dark. It looks like a family of opossums I am dealing with.

That's about it on my end.....I haven't been able to sit down and respond to any post, but I get the updates through the subscription so I still read up on how everyone is doing.

Hope everyone has a good weekend.....

Too cute, next thing you know they will be following you to your door step!

They're the friendliest, tamest chickens I have. Even more so than the ones I raised. I can walk out and pick up any of the hens. Then again, I've heard they get sweeter when they start to lay?

They caught me. :) The rooster likes them better, and follows them around dancing. It's hilarious.

Speaking of my roo... I guess he has dry pox? I noticed today he was puffy around the eyes.

These chickens, I swear... :/

I have some vet rx that I've heard mixed reviews about. Will that help his symptoms any? I understand it's a virus that has to run it's course. It's just a never-ending process.

I don't foresee anymore flock restructuring, so hopefully by spring they will all be immune to everything. :D

I have never used Vet RX so I can't speak on whether it works or not...

I hope your in the clear, I always keep my fingers crossed, when everything seems to be going great I get something else to worry about...I hope it ends for you. For me just when I thought I had CRD under control, A game rooster developed a nasty nasal infection with a puss pocket I have been doctoring for two weeks, I had one two week old with a wing infection that has left him with a deformed wing. Just when I had that under control a 6 week old develops rickets Then in three of my 4 week old guinea's somehow manage to get their legs stuck in a brooder cage one did not make it, one had a swollen leg for a week, Thought he was going to lose the use of his foot I got to the third in time, never had that happen. , I am waiting to see what's next.

A flip side to it, you learn and pass on to others in hopes they can avoid, the same problems themselves....

I've learned to manage and pretty much eradicate CRD by giving 6% Amprol or Corrid for 5 days before I put young ones on the ground or before moving older ones, then another 5 days of Amprol 6% as a safety net. Using this method I have had a ZERO loss to CRD. The infection well there is no safety net. The rickets, well I just ordered different variation of Packets of Vitamins and Electrolytes to have on hand in case it develops in any others.

I love your RIW....I only have one, she's so cute and sweet I have no need for her, but I cant seem to let her go.... Yours remind me of her...

Thanks Linda. :) I'm in Ruston. I live just a few minutes out of town. It's real easy to find from I-20.
When you want to come by just shoot me a PM and I'll give you my phone #.

Be sure to post pics when your coop is ready :)

Cody :)

I haven't had a chance to post pictures of the chickens my youngest daughter won with at the fair. We didn't expect her to win anything as these are not chickens purchased from "show quality" stock. But we do take good care of them and gave them a super nice spa day prior to the fair. This was STRICTLY FOR FUN and for her to learn the process of showing chickens. Although there really aren't a lot of "show" chickens at the fair.

This Buff Orpington won 1st in one judging and 2nd in the other judging. We adore this girl and her sister as well (who didn't go to the fair as she has a tiny crack in her beak we are working on getting grown out). So of course what do you think this girl of mine wants to do..........get a Buff O roo of course, lol.

This sweet Frizzled Cochin won 5th place in one judging. But she did have a couple of faults we knew about that prevented her going any further.

This Golden Polish hen is nutty as a fruitcake. But she won 5th in one judging. The kids had cut her wing feathers awhile back and they didn't all grow back in before the fair, and she also is lightweight for her breed. Her cut wings prevented her going any further in the second judging.

I think its a good thing that we don't have any land right now or we probably would have come home from the fair with a goat. I could barely keep my kids away from them!!!

congratulations!!!

Are you talking about your Sussx or the white ones? Those are RIWs? Friendly chickens are the best!
