"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

400

Here's my contribution for the silent auction! Six of my own RIW eggs and six duck eggs from my farming neighbor in that cute ceramic Rachel Ray holder that I found at Tuesday Morning for $9.99!! The tray alone is worth $20, so I'm going to start the bidding at $10.

I found a big clump of feathers in the yard when I went to lock up the coops and was fully expecting to be one short at head count. Everyone was present and tucked in, so I'll have to check in the morning to see who has a bald patch. It's one of the SS, or my barnyard pullet, based on color.

This Sunday (Nov. 2) @ O'Keefs feed store (the one by court house) is having chicken trade from 8:00am to 12:00pm husband wants me to whittle down to 15 hens and 1 rooster so I will be there. St. Paul's is good my friend's child goes there

I'll be there checking things out! I think it will be fun, I've never been a chicken swoop before and I think the kids will like it too! My husband is probably terrified I'll come home with more though! Lol!

LOL... I know it's like telling a gambler to only bring $20 's to the casino

Please take a picture of that cockerel when you get him!! It does sound like you've got a lot going on...but a great game plan! I'll have to look up the Larry Hall method, it sounds interesting. I would really LOVE to add some of Pam's offspring to my flock, however I need to get us "situated" first and figure out a few things. Nothing like having to act like an "adult" (dirty word)!! I want more chickens!!! I just don't have the time or space right now.
Money wise I think I'm gonna have to go redneck on my planting this year. After I get the Blosl cockerel I'll be broke. Sooooo putting off the fence building and garden beds for a while. If I didn't take this opportunity it would set my breeding plan back for a whole year. Fred only sells them in the late fall. He doesn't do eggs or chicks. I have the bottoms of several large plastic dog kennels. There's about a 3" lip on the open side and I can up end it and put 5 or 6 grow bags in it with plenty of room to add water to it. I like this method because I'm always so overrun with fire ants. To save even more money I think I'm going to do like a fellow on a blog and put 30 or so tacks in a small square of cardboard and glue the cardboard to a small board. Then take a sack of potting soil and poke a lot of holes in the sides and bottom and open it and roll it down to make a cheap grow bag. Can you believe I have had Pinterest for over a year and never could figure out how to get to the sites. I learned yesterday and have been having a ball reading up on gardening.
I'm pretty dead this evening. Today I unloaded the dishes getting ready to clean the kitchen. Aimee comes in and said her assistant just quit with no notice and she had a standard poodle coming in for a groom. You know the ones, about 3 ft tall? I went up to help her and spent 2 hrs holding a straining, tugging, fighting, biting hellcat. Aimee was so appreciative that she finished the kitchen and cooked supper. I fed the chickens before coming in and have not moved from my room. Going to sleep good tonight.

I'm happy, happy.

It's called a chicken swap. I don't know why the only swap is money for chickens. One of the members here sells meal worms along with chicks. Pam

well as for me, I am not selling just giving some to a good home for free. They are all under a year

SO HAPPY with the way our back yard looks now! We got rid of the old rotten fig tree - golly, I had no idea that sucker was taking up so much room -- everything is so open now! Our burn pile is as big as our house - going to have one heck of a weenie roast one of these days.

Getting the "hatch" fever but trying to contain it. Still no brown eggs, just blue & green ones. What is going on with my brown egg layers? some are still in moult but most are growing feathers back....boosted the protein level in their feed, maybe that'll help. On the other hand, maybe they are just too old now. Might be time to start the next generation...
A BUNCH of my older hens are in molt. It seems they have been taking turns dropping feathers everywhere. Looks like a new pillow fight out there every day.

And have a look at this sweet girl. We finally broke her from being broody and she looks fine........cute and fluffy.

Until you look at her chest that is

Good thing my kids like to handle all the birds. They (especially my youngest) really like to give each bird a once over every now and then. I'm not sure this is a regular molt though. I think she may have plucked her chest a bit when she was trying to hatch eggs. More high protein snacks for everyone tomorrow. I can't wait until I get some pretty colored eggs again!!!

Good morning La-yers! How's everybody this foggy morning? I see we have a cool front on the way -- Sat high is supposed to be only 70! & lows in the 40s -- time to break out the blankets! I need to get my caladium bulbs dug up & stored for the winter. Is anybody raising a winter garden? I'm giving mine -and me - a rest this year.

The girls are so funny; they are suspicious of the new coop door - it is on a pulley & slides up & down so I don't have to go into the run to open it -- they give it all kinds of cocked heads & strange glares before they run quickly through it in the morning.
We have a variety of fall veggies in. Just a little bit of each thing. A few kinds of cabbage, carrots, turnips, elephant garlic, green onions, peas........that's it so far. We are just working on it when we have a spare half hour here and there.
