"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I just went to check on them on my way to bed and when I shined the light into the little playhouse, I saw tons of bugs everywhere! Little black bugs with wings. Nearly every inch of the walls was covered. I never see bugs like that during the day and they weren't in there earlier tonight when I put them (yes, I had to place each of them in the coop and close the door because they didn't realize this was their new house...they tried to go to sleep on the big branch in the run) in there. Should I be worried? I haven't gone to check on them late at night in months so I don't know if this is something that just happens at night or not.

What type of bugs? I would worry if they were mosquitoes, just because of the awful time I'm having with fowl pox right now.

Do y'all ever take chickens to the vet? There's one in Oakdale that says "avian" on the website, but I'm going to call when they open to make sure they'll see chickens.

One of my favorite pullets has stopped eating and stands droopy like they do with cocci. I just treated for cocci, so I don't think it's that again. I started a thread over on the emergencies forum with pictures of everyone, if anyone wants to see. It's pullet #2 that's stopped eating.

I couldn't see any of the wet pox in her throat, and I cleared what I could from her mouth. I would give tylan to her to help with her respiratory symptoms, but I know my local feed store doesn't carry it. So, if I have to drive to TSC in Oakdale anyway, may as well see the vet?

Hey Louisiana Peeps! It's been a long time, I know, but I have been keeping up with you all. Love all the info I get from you guys...I have a question though. The back line of my property was planted with yaupon hollies and last year we noticed for the first time that the wild birds just gobble up the berries! So my question is are they safe for chickens too? I googled it and can only find info that birds eat them but they will make humans vomit. Anyone know about chickens? I was thinking I could cut a branch or two every couple of weeks to give them something different to do...;) Thanks for any help!

I just took one very sick red sex link to LSU for an examination. They ended up doing a necropsy. It is sad, but at the same time in order to find out what was affecting the flock and what strain of the disease they have, that was what had to happen. Other than that they just told me to give more antibiotics until the results of the necropsy come back. I really hope your vet visit goes better! Please let me know if they offer alternatives to necropsy! And let us know what happens to your hen! Rachel

Do you have oyster shell or grit for them? Sometimes that's from a lack of calcium. Sometimes it's just from being a new layer. Pam

What kind of feed do you use and how much does it cost per bag? I started using Texas natural pellets because it is non GMO and soy free, but it is running $24.50 per #50 bag. I think I've found a way to get it wholesale but I was curious to see what you used since you use organic feed. Thanks! Rachel

I belong to Azure Standard a truck drop co-op. The price vary's they have sales etc. their is one brand no their web site that is 20.00 but my hens are used to whole grains and wouldn't eat the pellets. You can go to their web site and see all feeds and prices. If you want to join you need to call them to find the closest drop. My favorite brand is scratch n peck. The price just went up but still cheeper than the feed store. Then I like big sky. Hope this helps. Now I do sell my eggs and get more for them being organic. So I recoop all my feed cost. Pam

Thanks! I'm a member of Azure Standard as well and I have bought the scratch and peck as a mix in with the fermented feed. I just want them healthy and eating the best we can afford as we eat the eggs in turn. :)
