My coop itself is 16x5. Sorry I forgot to add that. And that is part of the 16x21 total area.

Missi, you should be able to put quite a few hens in that area. How many do you have now?

I have 19 total.. 3 hens & a Roo (actually they could still be called pullets since the were bought as day olds from Tractor Supply around March) so that makes them about 10 months old and I have 15 - 20 week old Pullets..

Ok, here is what I am thinking...some ppl go by the 4sq ft per bird...some go by the room their coop seems to have...since your coop is like mine...which is open...they aren't closed in all the time...What other breeds are you looking into getting? Sorry about rambling on..thats what hpns when you think before you had enough coffee and on a Superbowl high LOL

OOO! nice eye candy!

I'm setting eggs this Friday (like I need more chickens--well, doesn't everybody?) Blue Rocks and Ameracaunas from Halo, Golden Copper Marans & Ameracaunas from pasofinofarm and some of my own Blue Andalusians -- going to have a full 'bator! My Welsummers just started laying so will set some of them when their eggs get a little bigger in a few months. I hatched them last July 1st.

My coop is 8x12 and open on the front also. I currently have 11 hens & my Welsummer roo in that pen. (the 5 Blue Ands are in a separate pen & run).
I see another coop & run in the near future!

I really like the look of the Blue & Splash Rocks. But I also like the ones that lay the very dark brown eggs.. Thats the Maran and Welsummer right?? I guess I'd just like a little more of a variety than all the BR's.. My poor rooster in definetly in the minority in the coop!!

I'm also thinking about adding another run on the side of the one I have now. (I've talked to hubby about it so we'll see what happens!) I really want to have it were I can put my Brooder in there so when I do raise babies again they are not stuck in there for 18 weeks before I can intergrate them. At least they would be alot happier...

This is definetly not something that'll happen anytime soon. I always get one step ahead of myself!! We're going to be building a barn soon and working on fencing up more of our property for our horses. We're also about to run water lines out to the garden, chicken coop and to the barn (when it get's built) I'm tired of hauling out hoses everyday!!
