Hello all! This is Reno from Metairie. Just got into raising chickens about two months ago. Me and my gf Casey have 8 now. 2 barred rocks, 3 americuanas, and 2 RIR, and our oldest lady a bantam serauma we bought at the rose garden cchicken swap 2 weeks ago. Just wanted to say hi :)

you came to the right place, enjoy the thread and the comaradery

I have one out of my whole bunch with a bald saddle/back area, i sprayed her with blue lotion a few days ago, i noticed today some new feathers coming back, she is only 7 months old, and is the only one out of about 30 layers her age, some others are showing some sign, but not nearly like her.:cd
That is not old enough for molting. On the saddle like that is most likely a rooster likes her and is rough. You can buy or make a saddle cover for her. Most chickens molt after 1 year old of corse I'm sure someone has had an early molter.Pam

:welcome I'm in slidell.Your americuanas are easter eggers Pam

Pam, my hen is 8 months old that has the feathers missing. I was under the impression they wouldn't molt until after 1 year so that's why I was asking/concerned. However, I don't have any roosters and all the feathers are coming from the upper back of the neck....do you think I should be concerned about feather picking?

Thanks rl and topdog. Any good chicken swaps in the area? We would love to get some exotic breeds. Here a pic of our first 3 birds

I have rare breeds Crested crean legbars which have just started laying hopeing for a good hatch. I also have Bielefelders which have only been in this country for 2 years they are big but they are also the sweetest birds I own out of 26 in my flock of assorted breeds. I'm still waiting for the bielefelders to lay. What do you want egg layers, Meat birds, Show birds ,Etc.? Pam

Is she or others picking? Are they just falling out? Pam

I did have 2 Black Australorps that were rough on the girls, they are no longer part of the equation, I only have the one great protecter, Bossman, which is in this photo, you can tell all the chicks dig him, lol, they actually seek him out and do a nose dive to get him to mount them, Donna and i have talked about this many times, so we made the decision to cull the bad boys. Now he has 40+ hens to him self, not that they need him as i do not plan to raise chicks off of him anytime soon.
