"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

:) Thank you Pam. How'd you know it was Tractor Supply, LOL. I was a little irritated that I bought a bag of layer feed. He was only trying to help. Oh well. :)
I'll watch for the colorful combs.

I can't believe how much these little birds are eating. They're like little vacuums. Do you leave the food available to your growing chicks at all times or feed at certain times of day.
I haven't tried the fermented route yet.

For the first month I make sure they have food all the time or anytime I check on them if they are out I feed them the second month I change to fermented chick feed. I fill their bowl 4 times they seem to double in size overnight. Pam

I haven't added one drop off water to my incubator and mine is at 27-30%. It always goes up when it rains outside, lol.
Amazing, isn't it. If I don't add water, mine stays at 21%. RonOtt1 is very knowledgeable about hatching. He said to take the top off for 2 hrs ea day from days 8-18. The cool down allows for a better hatch and lower mortality.

Chick feed till 8 weeks. Then change to grower I don't have a set time for grower. I keep them on grower till their combs turn bright red then I change to layer.most workers at TSC don't know what their talking about. Next time listen to that little voice that is telling you they are wrong. Pam

X 2 & I mix it with gamebird crumble, which is a higher protein level. 1/2 & 1/2 -- this time of year, when it gets cold I also throw a few scoops of chops -- chopped corn -- I know a lot of people don't like that but I think it adds something extra when it's really cold outside - sort of an extra treat.

Terri, I've been feeding the Dumor gamebird starter 24% protein. I read on the forum that others have fed it as well. I hope it's ok.

@Ron Skekel
Hi Pam, I know you have German shepherds, how did you train them to be good with the chickens? Ours is an 8 month old puppy and she broke into the chicken yard and killed 4 ducks and 4 chickens. We aren't even sure how she did it...any advice? Thanks! Sad day at our house!

So sorry for your loss! I kept them separated till they were 2 years old. In the puppy stage they can't control impulses fueled by prey drive.i would let them smell them while I held the chicken and Ron had our dog on a leash. This is to let them know they are mine and will be part of the pack. What breed is your dog? Some will never except them.
My last female would stalk them but she was five when we got them I just stayed on her for two months till she knew I wasn't going to give her the chance to hurt them. After a few months I could leave her outside with them and she would leave them alone. Now she bonded with my husband and if they went by him she would run them off. One day she saw me chasing them off my sidewalks from that day forward she would run them off the sidewalks. Which was great, I was doing it because I didn't like the poop on the walkways.
Is your dog male or female ? The female will catch on sooner. Sadie our female as a pup the age of yours would kill them if they came in the yard. After traing with consistencecy she would listen.now if a chicken gets in the yard she will herd it to the gate of the chicken yard. You have to train 5 to6 days a week. I don't care how tired you are if you give a command and your dog doesn't respond in 5 seconds get up calmly no yelling or anger make them do it. They are like teenagers they will test you and see what you will let them get away with. So they need to know you won't let them get away with anything. Then your dog will respect you.
Never call your dog to you for a correction. If you do they will never come. I don't use the word come. I call their name. When I call their name they come running and sit facing me.
Then their are dogs that have such strong prey drive nothing will stop them. So let me know sex, breed, and where your at in training and I can give better advice. Your not that far that if you need help training I could help you if we can't fix it through messages. Pam

I add raw sunflower seeds.

We have a female German Shepard. She is really smart, but does have a strong prey drive. Thank you so much for the help! I really appreciate it!
