"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Candled tonight - there is *something* in some eggs - had one I think was a clear, like I say, I am the world's worst candler -- so-- didn't smell anything funny so they all stay in & we'll keep checking w/the "sniff test" & see what happens week after next.

I'm the worst. That is unless its just blue and green eggs. The eggs I opened had no smell. They would be really old to smell. Even the one with the underdevloped chick didn't smell. Pam

Few more chicken pics. Can anyone tell the sexes yet? :)
Its really hard to tell if you could take a close up of the faces, and combs. At a distance they look like pullet, but some breeds can be deceiving. Do you know the breeds they are? One looked like an easter egger, if so it will be hard until the saddle feathers come out. The red looks like a RIR pullet. Again the pic's are a little to far away from their faces!

As for your hen house, only you can decide you will change it a thousand times. Only you know what's best for you. , I can see a potential problem with your perch. Bumble foot can be caused by the 2x4's dirt and splintering. I use painted closet rods, keeps splinters from going into their feed and your able to keep it clean of dirt and droppings by simply removing them spraying with bleach and spraying off with a water hose every few months.

In all the years I've hatched, only one time did I have a bad egg in the bator & I knew it the millisecond I took the top off.
Took it out VERY CAREFULLY & straight to the bayou & pitched it. I've never had any others smell, even when I 'egg-topsied' the ones that didn't hatch.

I think, when I first started hatching, I over-candled in my eagerness & would get so excited when I saw movement & I overhandled the eggs & had a poor hatch. From there I went to the opposite extreme, I now feel 'less is more' so I try not to handle them any longer or more often than absolutely necessary. I can wait. I know some will hatch. I can be patient now.

I had a great hatch from one of my incubators, 7 Wheaten Marans, 7 White Rocks, 5 Gold Laced Wyandotte's, 7 Lavender Australorps, 4 Danish Brown Leghorns. Its a good feeling..30 out of 41 hatched......four more incubators to go hatch dates of Dec. 10, 16, and 20th.......All of them did so well using a dry hatch method....No water, humidity has been too high here.Thermostats have been perfect, hope I haven't cursed myself. I still have 41 in one, 41 in another, 24 in another, and 21 in another. My husband has threatened to move me out of the house and into the poultry house with a tv, coffee pot, and couch.....He couldn't stand it, he would end up in there with me.....He enjoys the chicks as much as I do..
