"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

TD, these are purebred rocks. So won't be breeding these with hatchery stock. I'd need to find a different purebred strain if other genetics were needed.
I'm really looking for a starting point. I don't know how many birds I should get from this source. There sold as a straight run so say I buy 30 chicks. I know I'd need or have to cull some of the cocks.
I don't know what is practical genetics wise to know how many to start off with.

I will not pretend to be an expert. But the breeder that article is linked to has really good breeding articles and you should sign up for his newsletters. And he has a website, has written books, fb page and the newsletters are free.

I would also think it would be great if you can find a breeder, group or poultry club of the same kind of bird that would be willing to mentor you. There is probably a Plymouth Rock Club that you can be a part of.

I personally don't think 30 is an outrageous ## or birds, if you can afford it. I would cut back to the best cockerels and hens. Keeping in mind that you want to keep enough to have back ups in case something happens to you best 2. And keeping in mind what ## of hens you end up keeping so you can have enough roosters to cover the hens. Only keep the best. I am sure there are specific issues that crop up with that particular color pattern and breed that an expert can advise you on.

Hey Camping, there is a group on fb called Speckled Sussex Chickens.

And have you seen this?

Maybe they have a breeders list.

Thanks! I just requested to join that group. :)

EDIT to add: That link is AWESOME. I found a breeder near Austin I'm going to contact about either chicks or eggs. I'm traveling to San Antonio at the end of February, so I could pick them up. There's no website, so I need to get picks of stock and whatnot. SO EXCITING.

I went ahead and pulled the tiny finch fart egg out. There is no way anything is hatching from that!

That is so cute. Are you going to eat it

Thanks!  I hope y'all don't think I'm complaining.  Because really the most stress I think is on the caregivers, not me.  His wife and my husband and his sister.  And the family of the boy that is having trouble.  They are the ones that truly are having it rough.  I am just glad I can be here for them.  And my little is not throwing up today!  Yay!  Her fever broke a little while ago and I hope that will be the end of it.  She is just really tired now.
Thanks a bunch Pam!

You may not be the direct caregiver but what effects your husband effects your family. He's you children's grandfather. We all need support from friends here and there. :hugs Pam

I know a lady around the Gardener area that is looking for large fowl hens for eggs. Her flock is down to 4 hens and she is looking to booster her egg numbers. If anyone has any they would be interested in selling I can pass your info on to her.

My yardwork helpers. I was dragging that feedsack around and picking up the junk that's been blowing around, and the stuff my big pup has chewed. I think the chickens know where the feed is supposed to be. ;)

Alright, I've emailed a breeder in Florida that's right along my route this week, looking for pullets, chicks, or hatching eggs. I hope that I get an answer! Their website doesn't have anything listed for sale. :/ I'll call if I haven't heard from them by Monday.

I'm facing the possibility of riding 7 hours with eggs on my lap. CAN YOU IMAGINE?? :lau
