"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Are those the heritage RIR? The ones I've ever seen are smallish, like leghorns.

Yes, they are heritage RIRs. They look nothing like hatchery RIRs! They are a very deep mahogany color - just beautiful I have to get some pics of them. They are not flighty at all -- they are curious & will come right up to you & hang around. Large, calm birds. I really like them a lot.

Three months old today & already my RIRs are integrated into the flock -- they are as big as some of my fully grown hens. I added them Saturday night & by last night they had already learned how to go into the coop at sundown w/the rest. Never was any fighting or anything. This morning when I went to open the coop & let them out for the day, my little roo crowed at me! TD, it's a good thing I kept two because something -- I suspect an owl - got one of the roos last week when it was so cold. I definitely will be hatching some more of these as soon as they start laying & their eggs get big enough (I don't like to hatch pullet eggs). I also want to hatch some crosses on my Cuckoo Marans & Welsummer hens & see if I can produce a sex-link chick - since Rhodebars are & that's a RIR/Barred Rock cross, I figure the Cuckoo Marans will produce a sex link since it's the same color pattern.
I hate you lost the extra roo, if ever you need this one back, you can get him, no problem, he is doing well so far, and i think you are right about that cross, should be sex linked by color

Glad to here you sold him. I will fix you up when things are back to normal. well a new kind of normal. Thanks for waiting till things calm down. I notice one legbar in every batch is a mean pecker out of every batch. My last one had a poulet that would peck the others eyes at 1 to 5 days old. This eye pecker.pecked my marens eye and he can't see out of it and its swolen. Little witch turned out to be a show quailty hen well so far anyway. Now she isn't mean to the others any more. My marens roo may need an eye patch poor little guy. As for my hatch last week 4 out of 6 Bieles made it one fully developed one died in shell. 5 out of seven FBCMs hatched two weren't fertilized but for shipped eggs I was happy with it.. 6 out of 7 legbars made it. one piped but died. I was toled with marens don't add any humidty. I have so much going on that I hardly checked them so under the conditions it was a good hatch. Pam
Yea. I read here on the forum to keep the humidity very low, don't add water until lockdown for marans.
Think it was this thread https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/852601/incubating-french-black-copper-marans

Pam did you have to assist any in your latest hatch?

Alright, y'all. Opinion time. And maybe even a question I've asked before...?

I'm setting eggs Saturday for the Easter hatch along. Of course with all the rain, I'm still getting mucky eggs despite clean boxes, turning the littler every morning, and frequently picking eggs. So... To wash, or not to wash? I understand both sides, benefits of bloom over benefits of washing, etc. I've been scraping them with my fingernails (cringe) and wiping with dry cloths, but it's not helping much.

Actually, I'm considering wiping them off with a little coconut oil to loosen the dirt. Just right before I set them. Any thoughts on that?

Definitely no oil it will clog the pores. I've read do not wash the eggs and also not to set them if they're extremely dirty. I think it's just a call you need to make on how dirty they are. Seems I may have read you can use a mild bleach solution but don't quote me on that.

I've read that too, about the bleach. I really don't want to move in that direction.

I don't either Camping. Sorry I can't give good advice for you.

I hope your hatch is going better than mine. I've got shrink wrapped chicks. One premature death in the shell. Still a few more to go that haven't pipped. It's a mess.
