Thanks Pam, Well, first of all, Donna has done more of the actual upkeep than i have, i have been offshore for 4 of the 6 weeks since it was planted, so my hat is off to her, plus she takes care of 3 grandboys, about 90 grown chickens, 30 3 month olds, 20 2 month olds and 40 something a month old and is putting 42 more in lockdown tonight, takes care of the house and yard as well, but i will give her a break when i get home, i know she is ready for one, the garden was her idea

It looks great tell her I'm impressed. Can't believe she does it with all the kids but I bet she gets them to help as much as they can. I know I did my Dad always had a big garden when I was a kid and I spent a lot of time planting and picking. They will look back on this time with their grandma as some of the best times when they are older. Can't say I felt that way as a kid though. Lmao!!!

I've been composting the chicken poop. And tending to my worm composter too. So I will get one going but won't be as big as yours. Hats off to Donna for a job well done. Hope you get to go home soon. Pam

Great news! what breed are you hatching? Pam

I'm hatching out Black Copper Marans, Silver Laced Wyandottes, and possibly a few Wyandotte/Mutt mixes. There's a Blue Copper Maran mix and a barnyard laying hen in with my wyandottes. If this hatch goes well I'll start separating the mix hen eggs from the Wyandotte pen and hatch only pure chicks. I wanted to have as many eggs as possible for the first try though.

Have you hatched marans before? If not you need to leave the humidity alone no water at all. Pam

Cody, you need to block them from feed at night, only let them eat during the day, this slows down their rate of growth and avoids fluid build up around the heart, thus preventing congested heart failure, one of the 2 leading cause of early death to CXs, the browns and the blacks develop slower and are not as likely to experience early death syndrome. I have done a lot of study on this as I plan to develop my own line of CXs in the future.

Your furniture is great quality and would be snatched up in the bigger well to do community's in the larger city's, try posting in the Thrifty Nichol or LA classifieds. Also search Face Book for Elcamino corridor everything poultry and livestock group and post some photos there.
TD, I've been doing the 12hrs on 12 off feeding schedule.

Thank you for the compliments on the furniture.

Oh yea! Donna's garden is looking great.

Both of my baby splash cochins are roos. :( That's disappointing. I have decent guesses on the polish babies, but nothing definite. Maybe I'll just keep them until they crow. ;)

The baby EEs are growing like weeds. I think I'm 50-70% roosters in that bunch. My favorites, of course. Isn't that how it usually happens? :/

I was really hoping the black/white and gray/white would be hens. Oh well. This is 9 of the 22 babies.

Eggs in the bator are looking good! I candled over the weekend. Of 61 eggs I only had one clear, so my rooster is clearly doing an exceptional job. I also had one blood ring, and a few that look like they might end up quitting later.

Excellent veins! They seem to be doing well so far with the hand turning. Of course I just can't wait til lockdown. ;)

I tried wing sexing my babies when they were 1, 2 &3 days old... I just really couldn't tell much difference between them. I guess the Buckeyes are difficult to tell apart that way. I am guessing that I have 3 boys and 3 girls by the subtle wing differences and by how they are behaving... Took a few pics of their dad today and here are some

Hi, all! I am a newbie to chicken raising and I live around the Lafayette area. I hope you don't mind a few questions and forgive me if I sound a little slow with some of them. What has everyone found to be the best for bedding/litter in the coop for the conditions here in La? Also if you use something in the run besides the dirt already there (ie hauled in sand) please share that also. Thanks in advance! T

Welcome! I live near Kinder and I've tried EVERYTHING. Sand was my favorite in the coop and the run, but I haven't been able to get a load yet this year. So I've been using pine shavings, the big kind.
