"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I have some rhode island red so a bigger bird like that. I want only hens I already have a rooster. It doesn't really matter to me what kind

We did get some hay awhile back. It's not the end of the world. I don't think they are terrible to get rid of. I have DE, but I rarely use it. I really don't think it does much of anything. Especially if the DE gets wet then it's pretty much ineffective. And it's collected using strip mining so I won't ever be buying any again. I bought this bag almost ten years ago. I'm still deciding which treatment route I'm going to use. Going to get after them in a little bit.
I could use Frontline, A livestock powder, ivomec........ Some people use a permethrin in a bottle that is like a hairspray type of can. A shot under each wing. I read that Sevin powder is now not approved for poultry. My vet years ago used Sevin powder on my cockatiels. Seemed like a strong treatment to me at the time. But it worked well and the teil seemed none the worse for the treatment. And there is also the neem oil that I really like and I know it won't hurt anyone. And I could add that to one of the other treatments and use it in the environment as well. I've used the Frontline in the past and it worked wonderful! Very easy too. But I don't want the critters to build up any resistance.

Making quick decisions is not one of my strong points. Haha! And those little lice are SO hard to see on a BUFF bird as they are exactly the same color.

2 of my buffs had them in late June. I dusted them and the coop with sevin one time and have not seen anymore.

x2. Mine were infested over winter, after fowl pox. I tried a pyrethrum spray (spritzed under the wings and near the vent) and did a reapplication and thought that was it. Then I noticed bloody vent feathers on my white hens. OMG. THE LICE. I immediately put one in the bath with dawn dish soap (like the dog+fleas treatment) and that was a DISASTER. She started flapping and then I was covered in suds and lice. I bout died right there. After about a dozen baths for everyone I broke down and dusted the heck out of everything. And also never had a problem since.

Well I'm not finding any lice on anyone except for one girl. She was a sleeping mate at night with a hen I culled last week. I think maybe it was just that hen that was doing poorly that was the source. I'm glad there isn't some terrible infestation. I mean seriously. I'm out there like a dozen times a day and you would think I would have seen some scratching or something!

That hen I culled had cocci when she was a young chick and she just want one that thrived after that. No matter what we did to help her. She wasn't living a fun happy life like I want to see on my birds. And she was 8 months old and clearly want going to lay eggs by the way her belly felt. Poor girl. I really should have done it when she was younger but I hate culling. It's the worst part of having chickens! I know she wasn't taking good dust baths.
