"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I have my 16 girls and 1 boy that I have raised since a few days old. They are all hatchery RIR. They should be laying in a few weeks. Part of me wants a mixed flock, trading a pullet for a pullet around the same age. Another part of me loves knowing I raised all my girls. They are healthy and happy.

I would love a mixed basket of eggs. I thought about ordering more chicks. For one, I'm maxed out on room for them to remain happy. 17 seems to be my limit. 2nd of all, I would have to wait for the new ones to get close to laying as my current girls are. 3rd, trading I'm not sure if health of new birds will be as good as the ones I'm trading. I'm at a complete loss.

I've brought home lots of birds from auctions and sale ads. It's doable, but you have to be prepared. I asked for chicken antibiotics for Xmas, learned how to tube feed, dealt with mites and lice, etc.

But I've spent my bringing home and fixing up sick and stray animals (and occasionally people). So it didn't feel unusual.

I made the drive down to Slidell to Pams and picked up the CCl roo and a new hen, i am happy with their color and temperment, when i got home with them, they were happy clucking and settled right in to the isolation coop for quarintine, now the wait is on for eggs, I want to say a big thank you to Pam And Ron, i wish we could have stayed longer but it is a long drive especiallly with 3 grandsons along for the ride

Thanks Topdog, It was great seeing you. I understand would have loved to get to know you and your lovely wife better. Glad you are happy with the pair. They are the younger flock of Legbars. She should start laying in a month or two. I was thinking about hazel and the color changing egg. When chickens lay colored eggs they lay the darkest when they first start laying and they get lighter as it comes to winter or molt when they stop laying. Come spring when they begin to lay agin the eggs are dark. Then the cycle begins agin darker to lighter as they stop laying. The whole egg process is interesting to me.I can't wait to see their first egg. Here's the Marens egg I got todayI guess she just had to lay for a while to work the color out.

Beautiful! I have 5 Marans eggs in my bator right now about that color. Nice size, too. Hope they hatch!

Have you treated it? Use gloves, Betadine, and a biopsi punch. Make sure to get all of it out bandage with nonstick gause then cover with vet wrap.It is caused by splinters from the roost most of the time. It also could be she cut her foot some how then it became infected. Most the time it's the roost. Pam

Do you give anything for pain or numbing?
I haven't found the biopsy punch local so I'm going to order one.
