"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I was reading the other day about breeding siblings. They were saying that it can double up on good traits of course. It can help lock them in. But that it can also do the same with the traits you don't want. (When I say "they" I mean breeders that are way, WAY more experienced than myself. Lol!). What they said was that if you think it's necessary the only way to really know if the pairing will help is to try it with that particular pair, grow out the offspring and see what traits they have.

Those hidden and recessive genes can be crazy. I hatched out a baby last week that has down markings that says one of my red Cochin cocks has Wheaton. I had suspected that but now have proof. Very interesting.

Genetics are so crazy. The sussex pullets I'm growing out have some penciling that I'm not fond of, but I don't know if that's something they'll lose in their juvie molt or not. They're about three mos now, so they'll have another molt in about a month, I think. That's what the last batch did. It's sometimes hard to sell the "big babies" because they feather in white on the breast, but not everyone knows that, and they don't know they white feathers go away. It takes about 2-3 months for them to truly look like their parents.

I just found another one of my buff's with bumble foot. Argg...
These guys free range and have been near the house a lot which means they are walking on a limestone drive. I guess they could be getting scrapes and/or cuts from that. My other thought is that my perches are too high in the coop. They have a ladder, but often times I see them jump down. I guess I'll fence them up and modify the coop...always something chicken to do... :)

Sorry to hear this. Make sure to sand your roost too. There is no numbing agent that I know of. I wrap mine in a towel when I doctured her.Make sure you get the plug out some times it doesn't come out with the bi-opsy punch. Get the betadine in the hole to kill the infection if you don't it will come back. Here's a pic of what it looks like.

Thanks for the advice. The perches are sanded and have 2 coats of gloss paint on them.
I think it's time to build a chicken medical supply kit.
