"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Thanks everyone! I'm super excited about her.

It's apparently a good day for the sussex: I've got another broody. Have y'all ever had a broody at this time of year? I don't really want to break her, but the mosquitoes are already awful and I'm not sure how the chicks could handle it.

I do have broody's every fall. I've never lost a chick for them being cold.

Here's Emily standing on her own two feet!!

She's got barely any weight on that front foot, but this is huge progress!! I'm so glad. I think I'll move her out of that milk crate soon. Maybe have her hobble to her food and water? Think that will help?

Yay! glad she's on the mend! I think having her hobble around might help build up strength.

Hey ya'll I have a sick bird. I wasn't sure yesterday but this morning she's acting the same way.

Her symptoms:
Stays in coop and sits in one place. I did see her walk out of the coop and drink water on her own this morning.
Her crop had some fluid in it and her breath has a distinct smell compared to the other birds.
Runny poop built up on her fluff feathers. Basically diarrhea.

I held her with her head leaning toward the ground and massaged the crop. Some viscous dirty looking fluid did come out but I saw no food.(I won't do this again after reading up on it as the chances of asphyxiation are high).

Right now I don't know what to do other than to try apple cider vinegar and yogurt to treat this as sour crop. Now I've read not to use the vinegar and to use baking soda. So I'm not sure what to do.
Her crop is not distended or bloated like I see in some pics online. So now I'm editing again. Just got back with the probiotics/electrolytes and she has been drinking water and her crop has a lot of fluid in it I assume water. So her crop is a bit distended/swollen with fluids now. I can't feel anything else other than fluid in the crop. Edit again 6:45 P.M. I just put the birds up for the evening and this girl just keeps drinking and filling her crop up as far as I can tell she hasn't eaten anything today. I tried hand feeding her some layer but she just picked at it and wasn't interested.

Anyone have suggestions? I know this is merely troubleshooting. Since no one has been online I'm just going to isolate her and give her probiotics and electrolytes for now.

I saved a hen that had sour crop. She lived for months in good health until the high heat of summer got her. A black heavily feathered Cochin though. I gave no food, no water. Allowed the crop to reduce overnight. Then red wine mixed with water (not much wine). Crop massages gentle in a downward motion. After a day the crop started moving faster. I then feed ONLY foods that would not contribute to any yeast grown. So egg yolk with some of the wine water added, very finely chopped greens. And I didn't let her overdo it. There was a time a certain number of hrs after I started only the wine water that she perked up. Eyes looked better, moving around the cage and vocalizing. To me it was shocking the difference because I had moved to the wine water as a last ditch effort since nothing else had helped her for 2 days. That is the one and only time I've ever had a bird with sour crop. She overall wasn't a very thrifty hen from the time we got her.

Sorry I need to log on more often and earlier. I read and gave this advice to primrose when her girl had sour croup. It worked for her. Use falt coke. Make sure it is flat. Coke will eat rust off car parts. So it will dissolve anything in her croup. Lemon had good luck with red wine. I hope something we mentioned helps. Pam

Sorry for your loss! I didn't read your last sentence till after posting. Everyone please keep Linda Brown and her family in your prayers. Her daughter that she lives here with her passed away. Linda had left to visit her other daughter in Canada for less than a week. I haven't spoken with her yet but am sure she is devastated. Please pray for her. Pam

Hey Pam, I'm not sure coke or wine would have helped in this case. There was nothing in her crop except water. There was probably at least a cup of water in the crop. I can't rule out Marek's since I may have exposed my birds to it. Marek's can affect muscles that control the crop and slows down the digestive system. Hopefully it was something else going on. This morning I took the carcass to the Homer Ag extension with the hopes of them testing for Marek's but the Dr./vet is on vacation. Lindsey Poole did a basic necropsy. Marek's is not something they regularly deal with so she didn't know how to take the samples that LSU would need. Two of which were the brain and sciatic nerve. If I lose another it will go to LSU if the vet is not there again.

Thank you for letting us know about Linda's Daughter. That is terrible. Will keep her in my thoughts.
