I lost a cockerel last night. Looked like he just fell off the roost and died. Wasn't a big deal cause his ticket was punched for the next culling but he wasn't fresh enough to eat after laying in the litter all night. I'm down to three Biele cockerels now. I'll bet the lowest man on the totem poll was happy this morning.

any idea what it died from?

I was also advised to use hot water bottles if the temp drops, would you even open it to add them? Im tryn to stay calm. Holdin our littles also, to keep Them warm and less stressed helps

Anyone have opinions on the auctions in Sulphur, Dequincy, Kinder? or are there any others in the area of Calcasieu / Beauregard / Jeff Davis ? I just hatched off about 100 chicks and will be sending half of them in one direction or the other. Just wanted someone else's input or experience. I've been to Sulphur several times, they have only labeled the cages one time leaving people to guess at what was being sold. , that was the first Friday of October and the first day since the shut down a few months ago for the heat. Any one know how the others work? or how to find information on the auctions. I have a lot of cockerels and pullets to move, I don't want to waist my time selling them for a dollar each due to someone not knowing what breed they are, I am better off butchering them...

The last auction I went to the chickens were going for 2-5 dollars per bird. Hens and roos. Low-balling everything except the two with reserves and those I bought @ the reserve price. I think the way to go would be at the site Pam mentioned.

I don't know what the cockerel died from. I still have a concern that Marek's could possibly be in my flock. I put him in the freezer and am planning to call the poultry Ag office tomorrow. To test for Marek's I think they need fresh samples so I'm not sure if they could use him for testing.

Pam, looks like the big red truck is in Slidell, Wednesday at 8:00 A.M. and in Ruston on Thursday, 10:00 A.M. I assume it's the same truck. The driver is a very nice lady that wears glasses and with brown hair.

Friday morning before the rain set in I seeded for some winter forage for the birds.
I put out:
200 lbs 13-13-13 fertilizer
50 lbs gulf annual rye grass
100 lbs river city wild game mix
50 lbs milo
50 lbs of unhulled Bermuda to come up in the Spring.

When everything is up and growing I'll get picks.

I sell mine here an on the poultry for sale groups in La.on FB. Camping shaw does the auction so you could ask her.There are classified ads on BYC. I'm not a FB person I was never on it till I needed to sell my chickens. You get good prices most people in the group know what it takes to hatch and raise chickens so they don't try to low ball you.I don't like the auction for one reason Bioscurity. I've heard stories of people buying sick birds and bringing them home an contaminating there own flock. Pam

I've gone to the auctions in Sulphur and Kinder. I've been told by other breeders that the Sulphur auction is shady, that they'll intentionally misrepresent the birds to get better prices. I prefer the Kinder auction, but the last time I sold I got $30 for 4 birds, three POL EEs and a cockerel. I don't think the chicks do well, regardless of breed. That said, I do love buying from auctions. But as Pam mentioned, bio security is a big deal. I wear "throw away" shoes when I go, and I quarantine in a separate place at least 30 yards away from my flock.

I agree that you'd be better off listing on fb. I'm a member of about 8 different chicken groups, and chicks do seem to go well, esp pure breeds.
