"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Good news...
We got the first egg from our BLRW girls!!! They are 31 weeks old today..................been waiting a while for that one!

Bad news...
We've got a group of 9 chicks picking at each other :-( They are American Breese that I got from Pam and they have been very happy and even affectionate chicks. Every time I go in there one or more of them roost on my arm or an the side of the box for me to pet them. Love their personalities, but yesterday they started the picking. It seems they are only doing it where the new growth blood feathers are coming in. I'm guessing with the light colored feathers they saw the red in the feathers. I've not had to deal with this before, so I guess it's another learning experience.

I had one have this problem use blue cote. The breese really have great temperments. Pam

No problem she aced the corse. ;) :lau

Oh yeah for sure! Hey pam, still waiting on some legbar hatching eggs!!

I had a Lady come by for a Biefelder roo. She left with the roo plus all my Bresse and Isbar hatching eggs. I only have 2 doz. eggs in my house that's a record. My hens are slowing in laying. I thought all my legbars were laying. Not so found 2 fairy eggs. So your on the list. I like to let them to get regular size before selling. I have to seperate my Neiderrhiders They are just starting to lay. Their roo is so laid back they don't get mad when another rooster tries to mount them. I cleaned coops yesterday. Tomorrow everyone will be in there own coops. It's funny left to their selves they like roosters of different breeds. Except some Legbars so hopefully after the holidays I'll have them for you. Pam

I'm not a betting person, but here's my gender prediction on all of the chicks I have.

Cuckoo Mmarams 9g 7b
Campines 3g 3b
Buff Orpington 7g 7b
Buff/camp Cross 3g
Breese 5g 4b
Isbars 2 of a kind, prolly boys.

If anyone need Roos let me know! :)

I do love hatching chicks but I would need more time dedicated to it. Between 3 kids, a job, and 20 chickens I stay busy enough lol

Hey i totally got you; i realize that without those things i probly spend a lil too much time on critters...

Thats an example of the 88 pharroh quail eggs i set... Im only keeping about twenty, the other half the hens are for a friend, the roos are going to make a great dinner ;)

And on a bad note: i lost one of my Isbar chicks, it seemed to have an impacted crop but it went down Really fast, im still looking into it, if anyone has any ideas? The crop wasnt hard, or hot like infection, the chick wasnt cold it was one of the last three runts still Inside until today :-/ there was no rotten odor but he seemed Really skinny and when i massaged his crop it sent liquid out his nose... It sort of sucks a lil extra becuz ive kinda babied the 2 Isbars, and my one runt Bresse hen :-/ havent quite Named them becuz im workin away from that... Toward thicker skin :-/

And i lost four chicks in the shed on the night before last, i believe due to trampling :hit had to add a second bulb in my shed, and @lakones u remmember how Warm that shed was? :-/

Theres no green poop anywhere or anything, no sinus stuff, head shakes... Ive concluded they just got too cold :( kinda spooky though, so many deaths, in two pens out of six.

I felt lost too when my baby chicks were dying and there was no clear reason why. Sry about your chicks, turk.

Hey! I pulled some chicks out of the incy and put then into a lit tote-box brooder with shavings (pine) from Tractor Supply and they all started going into seizures within about 5 minutes. We yanked em out and put them on a towel atop a warm heating pad. Within an hour they were normal again. The only thing we figured was that the fumes from the shavings being heated by the lamp caused a neurological reaction. Very scary! I only use Bermuda hay or corn cob pellets (when they get older) now. Or if it's warm outside, I will use the shavings, but not with a heat source.
