"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

When I'm dealing with chicks that have been through shipment I would never want to be without this. Not ever ever ever again. It seriously can bring a chick back from the brink if it is possible. I use it for chickens going through molt, and as an occasional addition to a cooked treat etc. I never mix it in their drinking water for adults. Only given directly to avoid wasting it.

The next major thing I deal with when taking care is chicks is that we have resistant strains of cocci. It took me awhile to figure this out and get it resolved. Not all chicks with cocci get diarrhea, much less bloody diarrhea. It depends on the strain of cocci. And those resistant ones are not taken care of by Corid or medicated feed. My solution this year was so simple and easy. Worked like a dream. Sulfadimethoxine for 5 days and done.

We've never ever had bedding kill chicks. If their moms can raise them out in the coop and they can run around on the ground dodging piles of broody poop they are more hardy than they would seem.

Good to hear from you! I am thinking after Christmas I will process a Bresse and a barbezaux. I'm looking forward to trying them. By then the berbs will be past puberty. Foreverlearning told me that's the main reason people don't like eating roosters. So I'll give her method a try. Lemon good to see you over here again. Your missed! You too Cody. Pam

I'm just sitting on pins and needles these days. Pouring out feed and watching all my young birds from this year's breedings grow. Deciding my breeding plan and breeders for next year in always on my mind. I have 13 red pullets still. With PLENTY of flaws. But there are some standing out, so we'll see. I'm hoping to keep 4 for breeding back to the original cocks. (New pullets to their Uncle, not their father). I do have a couple of red/black crosses that are nice. Much better type and we are still going to keep that going to help improve the line. I ended up with 4 nice well types black hens. I'm hoping they will be very useful. If not for breeding, then for brooding. And we are going to set up a trio or quad that should throw a high number of nice black mottleds, some frizzled. My mottled little man Oreo is looking like a stud. I really hope he continues to do well. He tries to jump the hens as often as he can get away with being that he is in with a more dominant red cock. I want to move somewhere with more land so bad my teeth hurt. God knows how bad I want it though and he will line things up. I'm just trying to get ready.

Hey, it's been a minute since I've had a chance to be here much. Looks like y'all are still some chick hatching addicts. :D

:frow ! Good to see you!

I never thought of light bulbs having a Teflon coating, but I do know that Teflon is extremely toxic to birds. I have an exotic bird in the house that we've had for 17 years. The breeder we bought from warned us about Teflon coated cookware because he knew a breeder that lost her entire flock when a Teflon pan got too hot on the stove. We removed all Teflon coated cookware that day.

Crazy! I had no idea before Cody posted that! I use "Producers Pride" bulbs, theyre not my problem :(

I hate to hear that you've lost some. I have a couple extra lights if you need them. I bought them, but don't use them at all.

Thanks for that very generous offer! I will let you know if something changes but i have abunch of the domes because of my reptiles and ive bought 6 bird bulbs!

Something got one of my buff babies that are out back with momma. I had to go to town yesterday and when I came back he was no where to be found. I have a feeling it might be a neighbor's cat. Now momma and the other 2 are locked up until I can get them a fenced in area. Momma ain't happy about it either!

Awe! Im sorry! :hugs

To those of you losing chicks. They get hypothermia really easy. What may be warm to us isn't warm enough for them especially shortly after hatching. Turk I've found in most my hatches and even shipped chicks I've received there is a runt that doesn't make it. Even when I spend time to keep them alive the eventualy die. I have 2 that did make it and they stay small. They aren't breed quality so they wind up in the egg eating coop. Now I'm just going to let nature take its course. It's hard to see dead chicks but harder to spend the time to baby them and they die anyway. Pam

:( i knew that her chances were slim but i never just give up without Any effort. One thing i have is Time Dedicated to Critters. Idk Exactly whats going on but im getting more concerned about disease. Two of my compadres are also having losses. Lakones not included, and i pray those babes are okay.

Thank you for chipping in, i really appreciate this!

I am offically calling out for help. I have lost 11/24 and im getting really upset. I worried after bedding, bulbs, heat, feed.... *sigh* im at a loss. I will pick up that nuteidrench Today. And Sulfadimethoxine... Im working the problem.

Two of my three chick pens affected. We lost 2/3 and 9/21 from the shed. Those two places are very different in temps, same bedding which is also used for adults. There doesnt seem to be any diahrea, no nasal discharge, or pox spots. I know that pox lives here though, my adults got it over the summer. I hatched all these lil ones, no vacs, and theyre nearly two months old! The bresse are even weaned totally off light! The dead are very skinny, with food and water in their crops. They become super lethargic before dying, and thats why i orig thought it was trampling to kill them. The legrathy starts about 36-48 hrs before becoming lethal. Ive been searching all day and i cant figure it up alone i need yall. Thanks in advance, i know you'll b here for me.
