"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Pam are you using light? I can't remember the last time I got an egg. I've given up til spring.

For candelling ? Yes for chicks ? I use heater, heating pad , if I have a lot and not enough room I add the light. When I first started I only used the light. My plan is to get the Brinsea brooder light/ heater. Pam Good to hear from you too. You have been missed! Pam

I'm just sitting on pins and needles these days. Pouring out feed and watching all my young birds from this year's breedings grow. Deciding my breeding plan and breeders for next year in always on my mind. I have 13 red pullets still. With PLENTY of flaws. But there are some standing out, so we'll see. I'm hoping to keep 4 for breeding back to the original cocks. (New pullets to their Uncle, not their father). I do have a couple of red/black crosses that are nice. Much better type and we are still going to keep that going to help improve the line. I ended up with 4 nice well types black hens. I'm hoping they will be very useful. If not for breeding, then for brooding. And we are going to set up a trio or quad that should throw a high number of nice black mottleds, some frizzled. My mottled little man Oreo is looking like a stud. I really hope he continues to do well. He tries to jump the hens as often as he can get away with being that he is in with a more dominant red cock. I want to move somewhere with more land so bad my teeth hurt. God knows how bad I want it though and he will line things up. I'm just trying to get ready.

I have no dought that will happen.in the mean time we can all learn from one another on choices for breeding thoughts etc. I will post more about it I hope you can too. Pam

:frow ! Good to see you!
Crazy! I had no idea before Cody posted that! I use "Producers Pride" bulbs, theyre not my problem :(
Thanks for that very generous offer! I will let you know if something changes but i have abunch of the domes because of my reptiles and ive bought 6 bird bulbs!
Awe! Im sorry! :hugs
:( i knew that her chances were slim but i never just give up without Any effort. One thing i have is Time Dedicated to Critters. Idk Exactly whats going on but im getting more concerned about disease. Two of my compadres are also having losses. Lakones not included, and i pray those babes are okay.
Thank you for chipping in, i really appreciate this!

I am offically calling out for help. I have lost 11/24 and im getting really upset. I worried after bedding, bulbs, heat, feed.... *sigh* im at a loss. I will pick up that nuteidrench Today. And Sulfadimethoxine... Im working the problem.

Two of my three chick pens affected. We lost 2/3 and 9/21 from the shed. Those two places are very different in temps, same bedding which is also used for adults. There doesnt seem to be any diahrea, no nasal discharge, or pox spots. I know that pox lives here though, my adults got it over the summer. I hatched all these lil ones, no vacs, and theyre nearly two months old! The bresse are even weaned totally off light! The dead are very skinny, with food and water in their crops. They become super lethargic before dying, and thats why i orig thought it was trampling to kill them. The legrathy starts about 36-48 hrs before becoming lethal. Ive been searching all day and i cant figure it up alone i need yall. Thanks in advance, i know you'll b here for me.

I think it's coccidiosis like lemon said not all show the same symptoms . Another vit. That is Inportant for chicks is b vitamins. Pam

Don't know about that one, but TSC Zachary does have corid which I used in the spring for the BLRW chicks that had cocci. It's in a small bag on the back wall. I have the dosage written at home too if you need it.
.
I think she ment sulmet is the brand name. I've used both mine do better with corid. It depends on what kind you have in your area.
I knew that Bresse was a runt I thought of keeping it but didn't want one lone chick. I'll replace it for you one day. If I come that way or your coming this way let me know. Pam

Pamela, I'm here everyday. I just don't talk much. :)  I've been working on the chicken coop and the like. Have pics coming.

Why is it people don't like to eat cockerels at puberty?

Have your Barbezieux pullets started laying yet. Aren't yours around 6 months now.

No they aren't laying yet. They are a little over 6 months.I think they will start anytime . The roosters have just hit puberty. They are Big I'll take new picks for tomorrow.
You don't want to process during puberty because their hormones are at there highest. They make them tougher. And the hormones give the meat a strange flavor. She wrote a blog about it in a FB group which explaines it better than me anyone can join but I'm warning everyone they curse and say what's on their mine. It's called twisted Mind homesteading. If you want in let me know I can get you in faster than just asking to join. All the info is in the blog files. Pam

Sounds like your part of some fun FB groups i really am going to have to get on That website... Agreed the testosterone suposed to makes the birds meat bad tasting, stringy, and tougher.
