Part of why we have chickens. Also, wait until you hatch some chicks from your own eggs -- that's exciting too.

I'm trying to figure out now how to make a nest box that I can keep dry inside that will be in the weather. My first set of Speckled Sussex should start laying in a couple of weeks!! I saw a bin with the lid on it and a hole cut out the side that would work I just don't want them to over heat while there in there laying!! Anyone have any other ideas??

My nest box used to just hang out of the side of the coop... But when it would rain, it would leak where it met the coop

So I added a small roof over it. But you could make a roof over it pretty easy.

Well doggonit -- I am short one of the BCMs -- had to be a fox or coyote-- there was a trail of feathers leading right down the soybean rows towards the bayou.

Time to get my traps out & the guns loaded.

I'm dealing with the same thing! Sorry to hear this, and good luck on finding the culprit!

Nice, are sheep easier to keep than goats? What breeds do well in the heat?

The biggest thing is that sheep don't climb like goats do. Goats like to climb and will usually end up on the hood or roof of a car if they can get to the car. Once they get to the car the hood or roof is not an issue. They will get there.

Something else I've noticed by having both sheep and goats,is goats eat brush and weeds and your flowers, sheep eat grass and don't like brush and weeds...lol....The goats get into EVERYTHING!!! Sheep are generally more laid back and grounded...lol...

Lol yea... Ive been checking everyday, so they are fresh. They were all in the sane laying box, I guess it will be their favorite.
That's how mine are!! They have 8 boxes and usually only lay in a few of them!!

That's how my showgirls are, they like to lay 3 to a box AND set that way....

My rams are polled (they do not have horns). I DO NOT like horns. Horns scare me kinda like those silkies and showgirls.

I loved my Barbado ram!!! Well was supposed to be Barbado, but I think he was american blackbelly, because around 6 mos he started growing horns."Ramsey" came from the local auction.I paid $12.50 for him.He was supposed to be 8 weeks, momma died but was supposed to be eatin grain well. He mighta weighed 2 pounds.I sat out there for a week trying to hand feed him grass and stuff, thought he was gonna die.

Yeah; practiced a LOT with my new incubator. It was lots of fun. Now, the day of reckoning has come -- I have too many chickens for my pens.

Even after shedding 50, I still have LOTS of chickens.

The rest I'll hold onto for a little while to choose my breeders for next year.

Any Orps,BLRW or BCM going?...lol...

I have some Buff Orpingtons. My Lavendar Orpingtons are not laying yet, although, I don't think it'll be too long before they start laying. I'm getting some Blue Orpingtons from Terri tomorrow.

I think they may be laying. However, I won't be hatching anything else until it cools off some. I've lost quite a few babies over the last couple of weeks due to the heat. That's sort of why I decided to get rid of some chickens right now.

I have some that are about that size that I'm growing out to be my next years layers. Do you need a few more like her?

No I got enough chickens lol. Thank you though.
It's weird everyone tell me that Orps are supose to be the friendliest breed. Out of the 7 in that coop she is the most skitish, Im patient with her though I think she will come around. The Golden Pheonix in that coop is my fav she is sweet and the 4 PR's are just starting to get real friendly.

OK; Well, mine would most likely not be very friendly because I don't handle my chickens very much. I don't get on a 1st name basis with my chickens. Only my geese.
