I thought my EE has quit laying until I found her nest yesterday in the wheelbarrow. That is one goofy little bird!

LOL @ wheelbarrow.

They are so cute. Congrats on the hatch. Keets are so darn unique.

They have to be cute when they are little! If they came out of the shell looking like adults, then we would all run screaming in terror!

Quick Hi & have to get some work done! just got in but at least my Winnie got a good report - she is cleared to start swimming for 5 minutes at a time!

Twiley got all of your birds caught & put up -- what a job! I am not exaggerating when I say I literally could wring sweat out of my t-shirt when I finally got back inside.

OK boss is calling, gotta go!

Well I just want to let Kuntrygirl know that she has gotten me interested in hair sheep! I was wanting to raise something at the property for meat, but I knew I didn't want cows. Goats are quite the escape artists, so I wasn't too interested in them either. I have decided that once the barn gets built I am going to get myself a couple of Katahdin Sheep They seem like they would thrive well in this climate, and pretty much everything I have ready says that they do well on almost nothing but pasture. They aren't the prettiest things in the world, but that seems like the only thing I can find wrong with them! Now to see what the hubby thinks of them

I have a few of them as well. I think all sheep and goats are cute but that's just me. They have their own personalities like chickens, ducks, geese, etc.

I'm excited for you.

It will definitely pay off in the end. Especially if they are on all pasture, you won't have a feed bill. And in the end, you will have plenty of meat for the freezer. A friend of mine sent me a link about the price of lamb. I know that lamb meat is expensive but I was IN SHOCK . I think the cheapest price that I have seen in my area is $5.75 per lb for lamb. YIKES!!!!! If I were to go in a meat market and purchase the same weight of lamb that I had butchered at the meat market, I would have paid $500 - $700.00 at that price per lb. I checked my receipts on last night from past lambs that I processed and I thought that the price was $40.00 but it was only $24.00 to process.

This was the total cost to slaughter 1 of my rams.
$24.00 to process
$ 0.28 to cut x 125 lbs = $35.00

TOTAL AMOUNT for lamb meat was $59.00.

Even if you add up the little feed that they get daily because they eat grass and hay, it costs less to feed sheep then it is to feed all of my other animals.

So, if you can convince DH to get some, then you all will never regret it.

Here is a link to the guide that I use and take to the butcher to let him know how I want the meat cut. I also tell him to ground up some parts and make lamb sausage.

I found a breeder in New Iberia, but these are registered breeding stock sheep. I am kinda scared to send her an email about price

Their sheep are beautiful though and MASSIVE!

I told the hubby about them, and he thinks it will be a good idea! Like I said, they just seem perfect for what we want!

Thanks for that guide Julie!
