"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Well, I just bought a house. A raised house, in one of the deeper neighborhoods in NOLA. I'm gettin' me a pirogue (or, more likely, a rubber raft), a generator, and then will bring the chickens inside before the storm hits. I've got a couple dog crates I can keep 'em in for a day during the worst of it, and if we flood again, they can stay on the back porch for the duration.

Or, I'll pack 'em into the crates and into the truck and go (with the two cats and the dog, the boyfriend, and everything else we can carry)

Or, I'll show 'em into the raised basement, leave the door open so they can come/go between the outdoors and their coop and a less windy area, and hope for the best.

This is the other reason I'm limiting myself to 5, so I can transport 'em relatively easily if I have to.

We're far enough inland we are that place people evacuate to, instead of away from, but we still get plenty of wind, rain, spinoff tornadoes, flooding & live on generator power when necessary.

I was able to secure several tie downs where I work, (lumberyard) that they use on the big trucks to tie down loads--these were old ones they were replacing so I got them for free. We used those to literally tie down our chicken tractor last time. (didn't have a coop at that time). We drove metal t-posts into the ground at an angle & ran the straps over the top of the tractor & strapped it down. We also did this to our outside metal storage building. Both survived with no problem. Half of our old barn collapsed and blew away, so there were some pretty wild winds. I have pics of the tie down setup if you would like me to post them. Jim drove some long metal tiedown stakes into the ground also - the kind that are about 2 feet long with corkscrew bottoms, you know what I mean? & tied off to some of those as well.

We have a coop now & will do the same when necessary.
If we ever have to actually leave, I'll stuff the birds in the big animal crates & haul them along w/the rest of us. I have a plastic baby pen that I use for the first "outdoor run" when they are chicks, and it folds up for storage & will bring that along so they can have some extra room to go outside the crates wherever they are.

Seems like I remember someone saying they put their chickens in individual gunny sacks and hung them from the rafters of their storage area.....guess that would work for the short term.....we leave ours to fend for themselves.....worse comes to worst, the dogs will have a meal.....those weather projectors said the same thing last year didn't they? Quirkiest job in the world if you ask me.....get paid to make predictions and accuracy doesn't count.............just gotta hope for the best.....

No family member left behind...We are going to try to bring the truck down in May incise we need it. I am working on building traveling cages for my chickens. and there is one big dog crate for all three dogs and a small crate for the cat. With the truck we would have room for more but usually all the animals, the computers, the coin collection, clothes for 2 weeks, a small ice chest for snacks and our pillows usually come with us... to texas. good luck to everything else. We have never had to evacuate though, and hopefully we never would have to.

If we can stay through the storm all the animals will be in the house and we will have about a gallon of water per each animal and human per day for drinking... saved up in those 5 gallon buckets, and non perishable foods for about 2 weeks. we need a radio of some sort. Batteries and some chicken diapers are on my list. Once the worst is over we can usually go out to my uncles because they have a generator.. which we will eventually get.

Well, we don't ever evacuate and honestly couldn't even if we wanted to. Hubby and I both work for EBR Sheriffs Office so we're on call through it all. I've driven to work during both Rita & Gustave!! Pretty darn freaky!!

Busy at work here. Tomorrow computer training & payroll, so Thursday I can take off work. We finally got our ancient 18 foot above ground pool drained & want to take it down & haul it off to the salvage place. I have to be here Friday because most of the guys are taking off to go fishing--that's good! I barter eggs for fillets, lol!!

Thursday night I'll candle the Ameracauanas (18 in the bator) please keep fingers crossed for me! I want these to be a good hatch w/LOTS of blues & splash GIRLS. I am the world expert at hatching black roos.

If I get a good hatch out of these, I will be selling off most (if not all) of my Blue Andalusians & Blue Rocks, and concentrating on my Welsummers & Ameracaunas.

Garden is up, everybody's been healthy (knocking on wood), life is good!

What's going on with everybody else?
