"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Well, I just got rid of another rooster. Put an ad on CL on the 13th and had no responses. Reposted it again yesterday evening and got a reply a few minutes later. He got here and wanted to buy 2 girls to go with him plus a dozen of eggs!! So, made a little money but also know that he's going to a home and not getting processed.

I candled some of my eggs last night... Out of the 7 that made it here safely from KY 5 are for sure growing, 1 maybe (it's pretty dark so I'm not sure) and 1 looked clear. Out of the 6 of my own eggs that I have in there 4 (Golden Cuckoo Marans) are all growing and the 2 (Speckled Sussex) are growing also. I'll wait till the weekend to candle the others from TX. I'm starting to get excited now!!

Got my eye on two new pairs of solid white racing homers , trying to figure out how I can finagle getting those home , have to quarantine those for two weeks in the hospital cage , so they will stick out like a sore thumb . Still working on some kind of a plan , maybe send her roses first , yeah , that's the ticket . Problem solved !

To me that's still high BUT since I've never processed a duck before I don't know how much harder it is to do than chickens!! I'm just guessing that if you skin it, it can't be that much harder can it??

ETA: With 50 birds you'd really think they would give you a discount!!

You're right, skinning is easier. That's how we did all of the ducks the last time. However it does take a little longer because because the ducks were huge. That price is still a bit high for me.

Skinning is far easier with ducks. If I wasn't working this weekend, I would go help you clean them. Cleaning ducks is something I am very good at, as I hunted them since I was 16 years old. I prefer to use strong poultry shears as the tool of choice when processing them. I would not pay more than $2.50 to have someone clean a duck. Its just too fast a process. Also when the duck is skinned and gutted, use a high pressure water hose to blast the lungs out of the carriage and to rinse the bird. It gets them super clean. I always freeze them in water. I always pile up the gizzards and clean them under a faucet. $1.00 per gizzard is insane. That should be part of the cost of the cleaning. Also I would want the hearts saved. I love those giblets.

Haha, our schemes to get more chickens....my boyfriend likes that they remind him of his dad, so he is pretty cool with the chicken-keeping, thankfully!

Okay, no way a raptor is getting my chickens. It is at night and they are locked in the coop with a tin roof. We did find that above the door on the front of the coop there was a gap, and you can see paw-prints, claw marks, and dirt marks from where the critter is getting in. It's a very small area to squeeze through, so we are thinking a mink. We closed that up with wire, set a trap with the remains of the bird that was killed last night, and are hoping for the best. I am going to check on them again before I go to sleep. Poor things are getting scared to go into the coop! We will also be going hunting every other night or so to see if we can find more potential threats. Next will be a dog to guard the pens at night if we can't get this under control! I've been wanting to get a Catahoula anyway....

Strange thing is that it is only eating my Lavender Orps. I also have BLRW in the pen(they are all 4-6 months old), but they roost on the higher bar, while the Lavenders stay on the lower bar or on the floor. Uggh, so depressing that my birds are dropping like flies! It even got one of the roos, so now I am left with 6 pullets and a roo.
