Goose peeps... This is actually a tufted roman question,but maybe a goose question in general...Is there a general sexing method?
 
Terri, I know that you mentioned it before but I can't remember. What do you use to de-worm your peas? I have been using Wazine but I have been reading so many posts where people are saying that Wazine is not any good. What do you think? If Wazine is not effective, I guess I need to change what I have been using. What do you suggest?

I rotate Safeguard for goats with -- well, I was using injectable Ivomectrin, which is water soluble from what I read in one source - but a recent discussion on the pea forum says it will go back into solid form after you put it in their water, so I'm going to switch to Valbazen instead. I'm up for Safeguard this month so I have 3 more months to make that switch. I only use stuff I can put in their water because they get so squirrely when I have to catch them, it takes them a couple of months to settle back down & become trusting again.

These are my notes I've kept - I only use Wazine on babies.
Other people may have different ideas & methods; this is what seems to work well for me.

WORMING SCHEDULE FOR CHICKENS

WORM 4 TIMES A YEAR, EVERY 3 MONTHS.
ROTATE: WAZINE, IVOMEC, SAFEGUARD, VALBAZEN are all recommended dewormers. Don't use the same one twice in a row.
DO NOT HAVE TO TOSS EGGS WHEN USING IVOMEC.
ALL OTHERS, TOSS EGGS FOR 2 WEEKS AFTER.

IVOMEC INJECTABLE (WHICH DOES NOT CONTAIN OIL & IS THEREFORE WATER SOLUBLE) 1% SOLUTION:

MIX 4 CC PER GALLON OF WATER (12 CC FOR A 3 GALLON WATERER) FOR 2 DAYS. MAKE A FRESH BATCH EA DAY.

TREAT AGAIN IN 2 WEEKS IF TREATING FOR LICE/MITES.

DRAW IT OUT, PUT IN WATERER & USE HOSE TO FILL UP & MIX WELL.

OTHERS FOLLOW DIRECTIONS ON LABEL.

SAFEGUARD 10% SUSPENSION LIQUID FOR GOATS: 4 CC PER GALLON OF WATER FOR 3 DAYS. MAKE A FRESH BATCH EACH DAY.

For new birds/babies:
My first worming @ 4 months I use wazine and then during the necessary re-dose (you must always repeat piperazine worming) use the stronger wormer ( 2 weeks after the wazine). Then I use the stronger wormer thereafter in same rotation as the older chickens.


For peas, same dosage as chickens (4 cc per gallon of water) use Safeguard
than Ivomec. (note*& switching to Valbazen instead of Ivomec).​

I am leary about trying to catch the peas and administering Valbazen.

I don't want to give them a heart attack. The only time that I have touched the peas is during transporting. I'm scared.

You can put both Valbazen and Safeguard in their water. That's why I use it.
Valbezen is the same dosage 4 cc to gallon of water.

I still think the Ivomec is OK to use & I still have almost a full bottle of it & I'm going to try this experiment - put it in the water & check later to see if it stays dissolved in the water or not. Even if it does go back to a cloudy form, seems like if you shook up the waterer real good, you'd re-dissolve it again. I've used it a couple of times & I never noticed that the water was cloudy or it appeared to be undissolved, so I don't know. It's just one person's opinion on the pea thread & I'm not sure I want to change up my worming schedule until I know for sure if what I'm using now isn't working. I like the Ivomec a lot & have used it on horses, dogs, birds, you name it, for years, with no harm & easy-peasey to use.

I will not use anything on the peas that I have to catch them to put it on them. I will not risk upsetting them. They eat out of our hands but if we catch them & handle them, it'll be 3 months before they get that tame again.

Julie, this is the peacock thread on the "water soluble Ivomec" -- as you can see reading through it, there are a lot of different opinions. I'm not at all sure I'm switching 100% -- I might just get some Valbazen & rotate that along with the Ivomec and the Safeguard. The thing is, Valbazen & Ivomec will get some types of worms that Safeguard won't -- but Safeguard still gets more than almost any other wormer. It's a catch-22 for sure!

But I will say again, I never noticed the Ivomec settling on the bottom of the waterers - but I am sure to make up a fresh batch every afternoon when I worm them. I do all of them at once -- chickens & peas , even though they are in separate pens. As far as I can tell, all have stayed healthy & no sign of worms, so I figure I'm doing something right...

I agree with you, I REFUSE to catch them because I don't want to upset them in any way. They are happy in their sanctuary (aviary) and I do not want intrude within their space in any way. A pea is soooooooooo different from a chicken.

A pea is soooooooooo different from a chicken.

I hear you loud & clear on that! They are unique for sure--I like their curiosity & they are affectionate in their own way, & I love the sounds they make, & they are growing more beautiful all the time.

I only wish I'd had gotten an India Blue male, I still think they have the most beautiful tail "eye" feathers-altho I know Romeo (my silver pied) is going to be striking when he gets his full train. D'artagnan -- IDK, time will tell I guess, I still don't see what all the big fuss about Buford Bronze is - he still looks kind of dull to me.​
