"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

So I have a question? Since it's gonna be cold this week what do u do for heat in your coop or do you even heat your coop ? My coop is on the south side butted up next to my trailer so no direct wind but I'm worried anoint my 4 month old chicks getting to cold they sleep in the coop with the other chickens and they were out with the past cold days so should they be all right?

I don't heat any of my coops and they are all pretty open. I make sure the north wind is blocked though. We had record cold up here this past winter for 2-3 consecutive days. They did just fine. I really feel that chickens are made for cold, not hot. I lost one of my original hens to a heat stroke this summer. I spent way more time trying to keep them cooler this summer than I did in the winter keeping them warm. My 2 roosters' combs did get a little frostbit but I could probably have prevented that with some Vaseline. I'll do that next time. Just my 2 cents...

Your turkeys are beautiful! Do you still have the one w/the twisted neck? did he ever get better?
I love your little grey-and-white "supervisor" out there w/the turkey herd! or gaggle or whatever a bunch of turks is called!

Your pea boys are looking so handsome! I love the blues on the IBs. We might have to work a trade when we start getting peachicks next year!
That's a fine looking coop on that thread! I am thinking of rebuilding the peacocks coop - they are going to need more room, I didn't realize how much extra space those tails are going to take up in a couple more years!

Predicting 32 here Friday morning. I add extra shavings in the coop & stapled visqueen over the open area at the top of the pen & the door. Never put in any kind of heat & they have all done just fine, even when it snowed a couple years ago. As long as they are fully feathered out I don't worry about them -- like Txchickmom said, they can tolerate cold a lot better than they can heat.

I'm the same way. All my coops have open fronts and I just staple tarps where they roost!! Have never lost one to the cold yet!! I used to keep a light on them for laying purposes but decided against it this year!!

Thanks for asking about Mr. Turkey. He is still strutting like a pro. Still has the twisted neck sine January. What I have learned and noted in my observations of him. His neck twists more when the weather gets cold and straightens up more when the weather is warm/hot. Don't laugh when I say this but I think his injury (as diagnosed by a avian specialist) is associated with or possibly brought about arthritis. I think my turkey has arthritis in his neck. He gets extra special care from me. I know the state vet will be surprised to see Mr. Turkey up and gobbling when he comes back to do my NPIP testing.

We can surely do some trading with the peas. You're right about those long tails.
