Looks like a bunch of snow and blue geese. Only thing illegal was dumping on the side of the road. They should have brought to a landfill

I made it home and the first thing that I did was go to the bathroom and run a warm bath for my boy. I then went to the chicken yard to get my old Tom turkey. I found him standing upright under the raised coop and he was full of mud from walking around in the chicken yard. He looked horrible. I picked him up and brought him inside. I let him warm up so that his body temp could adjust to the warm inside temps before putting him in the bathtub that was full of water. After picking eggs and closing up the coops, I came back in and bathed my boy. The water immediately turnes brown because of all of the mud. He let me bathe him with no problems. In fact, I think that he was purposely turning arouns in the tub so that I could wash the other sides. After bathing him, I towel dried him and gave him a good pedicure. He remained still and let me work on him. Afterwards,

What is a turkey manicure? Do I need to manicure my girls? They're a little dirty on their feet, but not muddy since I put in all that gravel last weekend.

For the manicure and pedicure, I simply check toes, toenails and remove all built up mud and dirt. Then I check the bottom and top of their feet to make sure that they do not have bumble foot. You can sometimes catch bumble foot by checking the bottom of their feet before they start exhibiting symptoms of limping. My tom turkey has had it in the past, so I make sure I inspect the bottom of his feet periodically. I don't want it to get so bad where he can't walk. I'm sure you know what it looks like but I wanted to post pics of my turkey's bumble foot.

Here are some pics from the last time he had bumble foot. This is the top of his foot. You have to get in there and dig the gunk out.

And they say that turkeys are dumb. Well not this one. I feel so much better knowing that he will not be in the freezing temps tonight.

Okay, so this morning when I was driving to work (I teach in Welsh) I saw a bunch of stuff on the side of the road and thought it looked like dead animals... It was dark so I just told myself I was crazy and didn't think too much about it. Well, on my way home I could clearly see it was dead birds right by the side of the road. So I stopped to see what may have happened. I could see right off that someone had removed the breast and thrown the rest of the bird. IMHO this seems mighty wasteful...maybe I am wrong, but that was what my gut told me. I am all for processing and eating whatever meat you want, but to seemingly waste other stuff and just dump bodies basically on the road at a stop sign?!?!?! I snapped a few pictures and called the hot-line for poachers. After about 4 transfers I gave my information and before I could finish telling what I saw he stopped me and said, "at blah blah blah intersection?" I confirmed and he said I was the 4th person to call. That made me feel a little better, that I wasn't alone feeling like it was wrong.... I dunno, just thought I would share.... Here's one of my pictures, this don't include all of the bodies the rest are in the ditch, in the water, all along the right, and in the road further... It was a ton of birds....:/

I don't understand why someone would do something like that.

Thanks, Julie! I had heard about bumble foot, but didn't know what it was and would't have known what to do about it anyway. I will check my girls for that. A picture is worth a thousand words. I think that heard that somewhere before...LOL

Yes, that is him. He is my very first turkey. He is about 7 years old. He has been threw A LOT and he is still alive. At one time, I didn't think that he was going to make and neither did all of the vets because he had a lot of medical issues but he pulled through. Although he is retired from breeding, he still enjoys his time on the farm. When the vet comes out to do my NPIP re-certification, my tom is the 1st animal he asks about and has to see.

You are welcome. It is a very simple procedure. All you have to do is remove the plugs out of their feet, clean and disinfect the area and wrap it up. The plugs look like a kernel of corn. If it's not detected early, it can get really bad and then infection sets in and then you can imagine what may happen after that. :/

It's cold!

I was wondering if anyone can recommend a reasonably priced plucker? I'm thinking that I will never have time every again in my entire life to pluck any more birds. :/

If you find one (a reasonable plucker) let me know- every one I've ever seen has been astronomical in price. I need building one would be the cheapest way to go.

It's COLD here! I've been shivering all morning. Will be glad to see the sun come out tomorrow.
