"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

If you find one (a reasonable plucker) let me know- every one I've ever seen has been astronomical in price. I need building one would be the cheapest way to go.

It's COLD here! I've been shivering all morning. Will be glad to see the sun come out tomorrow.

Well it's funny that you said building a plucker. I just emailed pics of how to build a plucker to you know who (my builder). He said that he can build one with no problems. I'm so happy. So, when he comes back from offshore, that is the first project on the list. I will keep you posted. Once it's built and you need to borrow it, just let me know and we can bring it to you in the pick up truck when you are ready to do your plucking and we can make that trip our feed store trip and we can pick it up on the next month's feed store trip. This would be no problems.

And yes, it's cold. Gumbo weather.

I was thinking the same thing - Jim could build one!

We already had gumbo; it's chicken & dumplings here tonight! I just walked outside during lunch to see if it had gotten any warmer at all. Nope. I think it's maybe 2 degrees up from this morning.

Sure did put a stop to the pea-boys fanning, lol!

Oh yea, I forgot that Jim is also a master builder. That smoker that you showed me the last time I was at your home looked fabulous.

Chicken and dumplings sounds delicious! :drool

HEY EVERYONE! I am in northwest Louisiana. I want to add a better breed of what i need to my flock this year and would love to hear some of your ideas. I have done tons of research, but opinions are always helpful!
So, I started with 4 Gold Sex Links, 2 black Austrolorps, 1 Rhode Island Red, 2 Leghorn hens.
Then a Faverolle and thepic below for roosters....(unknown breed if anyone knows)
400

Also one Japanese and one Sebright Bantam hen, and one Booted Bantam Rooster (that we have for 'why not').

First it was just for eggs, Then I bought an incubator and hatched 67 chicks last year. After the neighborhood dogs, hawks, etc killing a bunch and me processing 15 new roosters myself,
I have only the following left: all the Bantams plus a new Rooster and 2 hens who wont come out of the woods;
Hens:
1 Black Austrolorp, 1 Leghorn, 2 Gold Sex Linxs, and 17 new hens and the above unknown breed rooster.

I need more meat birds that lay eggs well yet don't take forever to mature to broiler size, can take Louisiana heat, and I can still incubate their eggs and continue my flock myself.
Don't ever want to have to buy chicks again and don't care if they never go broody since I use the incubator. I need to fill my freezer yearly and still have eggs to use/sell.
Ideas on what breed to look for/buy?

I made it home and the first thing that I did was go to the bathroom and run a warm bath for my boy. I then went to the chicken yard to get my old Tom turkey. I found him standing upright under the raised coop and he was full of mud from walking around in the chicken yard. He looked horrible. I picked him up and brought him inside. I let him warm up so that his body temp could adjust to the warm inside temps before putting him in the bathtub that was full of water. After picking eggs and closing up the coops, I came back in and bathed my boy. The water immediately turned brown because of all of the mud. He let me bathe him with no problems. In fact, I think that he was purposely turning around in the tub so that I could wash the other side. After bathing him, I towel dried him and gave him a good pedicure. He remained still and let me work on him. Afterwards, I put him in the laundry room on top of the comforter. It took him about 3 minutes to find a comfortable spot to lay down. And they say that turkeys are dumb. Well not this one. I feel so much better knowing that he will not be in the freezing temps tonight.

I love that you are pampering your old tom!

Okay, so this morning when I was driving to work (I teach in Welsh) I saw a bunch of stuff on the side of the road and thought it looked like dead animals... It was dark so I just told myself I was crazy and didn't think too much about it.
Well, on my way home I could clearly see it was dead birds right by the side of the road. So I stopped to see what may have happened. I could see right off that someone had removed the breast and thrown the rest of the bird. IMHO this seems mighty wasteful...maybe I am wrong, but that was what my gut told me. I am all for processing and eating whatever meat you want, but to seemingly waste other stuff and just dump bodies basically on the road at a stop sign?!?!?!
I snapped a few pictures and called the hot-line for poachers. After about 4 transfers I gave my information and before I could finish telling what I saw he stopped me and said, "at blah blah blah intersection?" I confirmed and he said I was the 4th person to call.
That made me feel a little better, that I wasn't alone feeling like it was wrong....

I dunno, just thought I would share.... Here's one of my pictures, this don't include all of the bodies the rest are in the ditch, in the water, all along the right, and in the road further... It was a ton of birds....

This makes me so mad. I don't understand why people do things like that. Wasteful.

It's cold!

I was wondering if anyone can recommend a reasonably priced plucker? I'm thinking that I will never have time every again in my entire life to pluck any more birds.

My uncle made his own. He pulled instructions off the internet and just bought parts. He said it was really easy and saved him a ton!
