"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Kuntrygirl, you can add them onto the cages you already have, just get some 1/2"x1" wire and add it to the bottom, after you cut the bottom hole in the cages and fold back the rough edges under. If I can do it, you can too! And you know you can ! I use some 16"x16" ceramic floor tiles inside in the summer to help keep the rabbits cool. In the winter, you can either turn the tiles over to the unglazed side or use wood which is warmer. The tiles are easy to keep clean and when it gets really hot, I rinse them in ice water to cool them off and replace them into the cages. I also save gallon jugs and 2 liter bottles and in the summer fill them with water and freeze them. When it's getting into the 95 degree range, I put these frozen ice jugs into the cages to keep the rabbits cool, and change them out as needed, wash the outside and refreeze. I also use frozen jugs to keep the brine on the turkeys cold, while they go through rigger. They last longer than cubes and don't cost anything! I also put some ice into their water jugs in the summer, but will be putting in water tubing and drinking nipples as soon as I get all of my cages finished and the barn rearranges. I only have 28 rabbit holes now and will be adding 26 more, for the add'l does and mini Rex's. The water system will go to a box that has a float valve in it, to reduce the pressure going to the nipples to gravity feed and I will add anything I want in their water like ACV, meds or ice. What size cages are your Flemish Giants in? What size for smaller breeds? What size nest boxes do you use for smaller size breeds?
My rabbits also enjoy a cold cucumber or melon on a hot day, so I plant a couple extra vines of cukes in the garden. Does anyone else out there also raise rabbits, in Louisiana and what breeds?

I'm not sure if I can do that Celie. I think that you're a little more advanced than I am. I have been spoiled over the years, so when I want something built, I just put on my sad puppy dog face, look at "my builder" and bat my eyes and look like I'm pitiful and within no time, it's built. Maybe I can practice my puppy dog face and send him these instructions and see what happens. I think I better wait until after I get that plucker built. :gig

I have used the frozen jugs for the chickens in the summer but never thought about it for the rabbits. I will definitely try that this summer. Thanks for the tip.

I'll have to check on the sizes of my cages. The old man that I mentioned builds them, so I just call him and tell him I need another cage and he already knows what I use, so I don't give him any measurements. I will measure this weekend and let you know.

I use the same nesting boxes for all of the breeds. It seems to work. The boxes are kinda big, so it fits the small and large breeds.

Now you got me all excited about future rabbits. :)

Sounds like you have some VERY lucky rabbits over there.

, I like that one!
I am not that adventurous any more. When I was younger, well that is a different story!
I raised a few of these meat rabbits about 18 years or so back and had them under rook along a fence, under a huge oak tree and I used 24x36 inch cages, that everybody called the rabbit condos, but not for long. it had a gravity fed watering system and open to the ground beneath, so I had a lot of worms for the garden compost. I was in the suburbs, then, so no chickens. Heck, I was working 12 to 16 hour days then and that was before I got home! LOL I use big fans on my birds, they all free range during the day, so the smart ones just lay in the shade on hot days and let the fans blow on them. Sometimes, I see a lot of them wading in the shallow end of the duck pond, the little buggers!

I do not have my plucker finished, or I would lend it to you! Sorry,

Yes, it's hard having a full time job and then having to go home and do all of the animal chores. :barnie

Terri, did the NPIP tester ever test any of your peas? My re-cert is Monday morning but I don't think they ever tested my adult peas. And then again, the adult peas do not come in contact with any of the other animals.

Mine always insists on testing one pea - I hate that, it upsets all of them after one is caught & subjected to the blood draw. But you know my pea pen is right next to my layer pen so maybe that's why.

Man it is so windy here today! I guess we have rain moving in.

Our annual AKC dog show started so tomorrow i'll be going to watch some of the action & look at pretty dogs of all breeds! last year they had a standard poodle in dreadlocks; it was so cool! Of course I know several of the Cocker Spaniel breeders & it's always nice to visit with them, and also to look through the vendor booths.

Breeds I will have available when they get old enough:
Welsummer (Grisham lines)
Cuckoo (or some call them Silver) Marans (Russ Young lines)
Rhode Island Reds (Roy Autry, George Ryan & whatever Jeff's lines are that he got from Chris, lol)
Peachicks and fertile hatching pea eggs

I'm looking for Blue Andalusians at some point in time.

Horstman RIRs and German New Hampshires. Terrie I'll have to get the Barred Rock pullets out of the RIR pen(unless you want a chance on some BSLs from the RIRx BR cross) or do some chicken sitting(which is a good thing in my book,LOL) to get you straight RIR eggs as they are penned together at the moment. Maybe by the time the GNH girls "get ta' kickin' it in gear", I can get/have them separated, which I need to do anyway. I'm going to be trading some BR eggs for some awesome Columbian Rock eggs from a guy in AR. LOL just what I need more like I need another hole in the head huh? LOL then when I get those up and going I'm going to get White Rock eggs from J-whip then I'll have all of what I need/or want for now, maybe. I know I need an intervention,LOL it all sounds good though.

No biggie Jeff - crosses will work fine - they are mostly for egg-layers anyway.
I need an intervention too & you sure aren't helping my addiction!
