Congrats!!!!!!!!!

Morning La-yers -- woke up to the pitter-patter of RAIN again! :barnie
Plus about a zillion grackles all over the place, invading the yard, making the dogs bark insanely, hogging the feeders and tearing the little birds' nests out of the birdhouses. I'm sending Jim out to shoot some bottle rockets at them & hopefully send them on down the road a ways. Our parakeet is going crazy calling back to them, so quite a noisy house this morning!  (the meter reader came by earlier & set the dogs off to bein with - he was wearing VERY bright chartreuse rain gear & I have to say, he startled me, too)!

Good day to pursue indoor projects. At least we got our gate finished, painted & hung on the new run yesterday so all we have left to do is sink some posts, stretch the wire, and paint.  Have a good one everybody! :highfive:

Sounds like the grackles have found a new home? :p

I didn't know you had a parakeet Terri. What's that parakeet's name? I want to see some pics!!!!!! :ya Glad to hear that you all finished the gate and hung on the run. It's a great feeling when projects come together. :) :thumbsup

You must begin by sharing with us how many/what kind of birds you have...we have to keep each other in check, ya know.
Anything under 50 is plain preposterous.
Anything over 500 is questionable.

Anything in between.....PERFECTLY NORMAL!!!

I currently have wyandottes and one black sex link...6 hens and 1 rooster. I plan on getting some fuzzy butts soon! I can't wait! It has been sooo long since I've had babies!

The one missing the tail feathers is at the bottom of the pecking order.. bless her heart. BUT, she has since regrown them. :)

well I just got back from Wally-world & I don't see any grackles hanging around so maybe Jim did "re-home" them.

You know how he is - he built a "rocket launcher" out of a piece of PVC pipe that he attaches the bottle rockets too. Works very well on stray dogs too!

Yes,. we've had Peetey going on 4-5 years now. As usual,. we did NOT just wake up one morning & say 'OH! our lives are not complete! We MUST go get a parakeet"! Oh no. It was a cold, windy, rainy day about this time of year, & Jim was standing under the carport watching the rain when this little green parakeet blew inside & slammed up against the wall. It perched on a shelf where we keep mud boots. Jim called me & I came outside & took some scratch grains & the poor little bird came right up on my hand & started eating - it was starving -- thin, weak, soaking wet. I picked it up & brought it inside & toweled it off & then we said, "now what"? so we went to PetSmart & bought a cage & proper food & avian vitamins and there you go - Peetey has been w/us ever since.

We think he is a wild parakeet - ironically enough, a couple weeks before he came here, there was a special on PBS about the migration of the wild parakeets and La. is right in the middle of their migratory route. They are all green just like the green ones you see in the pet stores. The week after the TV show, I was outside & heard all this chittering & son-of-a-gun if there wasn't a whole flock of them right there! about 12-15 green parakeets. We spotted them around for a couple of days & then they were gone. We figure Peetey was part of that flock & too weak to keep up. We have seen them about this time of year several times since. I'm just afraid to turn Peetey loose because he is used to being fed now. He has never tamed down to the point of sitting on my finger or anything like that but he doesn't mind me cleaning his cage, & he plays with his toys & sings & feeds his imaginary friend in the mirror, so as far as I can tell, he's happy. We even thought about getting him a mate but that seems to be hit or miss as far as whether he would hit it off with another bird, so we decided to leave things alone.

I tried to post a pic of him but it isn't letting me right now for some reason. will try again later on.

Awwwww, that is a sweet story about Peetey. How lucky can a bird get to end up in a loving home. I love the part about him feeding his imaginary friend in the mirror :gig. As long as Peetey thinks somewhere is there, then someone is there. :p I love that story. How lucky can a person get to have wild parakeet to roll in. I didn't know that parakeets migrate. I really didn't even think about parakeets being "outside". When I think about a parakeet, I think about them being an inside bird. But I know they have to come from somewhere.

Can't wait to see a pic of Peetey. Great story. Thanks for sharing.

Hi, Terri! What are grackles?

BTW, I loved the Petey story. Like Julie, I just didn't know they ever fly around here, I thought they were only wild in South America. See how much I learn off of this thread! It's amazing.
