"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Welcome to all the newcomers!

I noticed there are a few around the Baton Rouge area. While most are not in an urban area, we should put a group together and call it the Baton Rouge Area Urban Chicken Keepers (BRAUCK). This way I can go around saying, "I'm a member of BRAUCK, you know, like the sound a chicken makes.... braaaaaauuck, brauck, brauck, brauck, braaaaaaauuuuuuck, brauck, brauck."

Hi Everyone. I've been reading this forum for a while; but just joined today. I wanted to say hello on this thread. So nice to see the community here. We live in New Orleans and keep a small flock of Americaunas, Wyandottes and Orpingtons. I used to have some Mottled Javas and lost the contact info for the person I bought them from (somewhere in the Northshore). Wanted to get a Java roo from her and breed my girls. Now I wouldn't mind getting some new Java pullets AND a roo! If anyone knows of anyone with nice mottled Javas in Louisiana, please let me know. Thanks! MamLou
I am in City of Central, and I am looking for better than hatchery grade chicks or eggs in La. Oh and hey to every one one this thread!
Wishing you both a warm welcome to BYC!!!

Hi, all you Newbies, WELCOME, we all have a lot of fun here in La-yers! We also try to look out for each other, best we can. We're like your new extended family! I think I had too much Chocolate, tonight!
BTW, at least 7 of my 13 turkey hens are laying, cuz I got 7 eggs today!

Afternoon all!  Welcome newcomers!

I spent my morning feeding/watering/cleaning coops and then had the joy of trimming beaks and nails for birds we are taking to the Magnolia show.  Our first time showing anything and I'm REALLY LOST!  Just going through the motions of what I have gathered from others.  Chickens do NOT enjoy having their beaks and nails trimmed just FYI--I have the scars to prove it. Since it is spring break for us this week, my 8 year old and I collected eggs--still warm--and then came in to bake Snickerdoodles with them.  I used one of the eggs from his favorite and almost decapitated -but now healed up nicely -hen.  He was thrilled.  May not be any cookies left when anyone else gets home today.

So in getting birds ready for this show next week I found a problem with my emu gened wyandotte cockerel.  Remember how I had to put him in jail for not playing nicely with others--well he's been locked in a wire cage plenty big enough.  But he's been rubbing his rosecomb along the top of the wire cage and now it's got places on the comb turning black!  Ugh!!  I neosporined it, but don't know what else to do to get that comb looking good in a week.  He will be moving into his own luxury jail suite this weekend after we finish putting the top on the new pen for the Lavender Orps and the RIRs.  Big pen for them--each group is getting a 15 x 10 run.  They should be happy.  The RIR cock is having a hissy fit trying to get to the hens I got from Terri--he's totally BESIDE himself trying to reach them.  Talks to them half the day, preens himself so he's all handsome the rest of the day.  It's hilarious!  Once he goes in his big pen with those two girls and my RIR hen that he doesn't even yet know exists I'm sure his excitement will escalate!  Wow!  3 women!

Hope everyone is well!  Friday for all of you tomorrow!  Stinks for me because that'll be the end of my spring break.  Ugghhhh

I guess I never would have thought of having to trim beaks for a show. I've only done that if I've had a chick with a beak injury before.

I let me girls out to free range a little in the beautiful sunshine yesterday. My Maltese mix was "grazing" with them LOL. He blends right in with his coloration and fuzziness. :lau
Aww...your silkies are pretty and oh so clean! Mine have been romping through the mud lol. Yep, time for

What breeds are you looking for? It's likely someone can point you in the right direction. There are lots of people with lots of breeds here. Chicken math at its finest! :)

Has anyone gotten "sample eggs" yet this year? You know the ones hens lay when they first start to lay, about the size of a marble with no yolks? I got the first one for this year in a nest today and am wondering what causes it?

I have got a bunch of them. I'm new at this so I just though it was because I have 8 hens that just started laying. Would like to know myself if any one has any advice.

I have some but I'm a few miles west of you in Vernon parish so it would be a longer road trip for you to come here.
