"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

So I'm thinking about adding turkeys to my flock. Any suggestions?? Input?? Give me the good bad & the ugly! Breed??

I have children too so that that into account when offering up feedback! Never done turkeys before so trying to get as much info from the best place I know where to get it! Thanks!

I have Bourbon Reds. I think that they are the best but I am a fan of BRs. :D

Instead of posting all of the pics and take up space on the thread, I am posting a link where you can go to and a lot of the pics are there.

Holy cow kuntrygirl!  I just had the time to go to your page and check it out.  The work you and your husband have done is very impressive. I saw all kinds of ideas I can use.  Did you have to do anything special to get your girls to lay in one area and roost in the other or did it come naturally to them?   I really like the separate nesting area you have for the broody hens too.
 Awesome job!!!

Thanks. As far as the girls laying in one area and roosting in another area, for some reason or another, they figured it out. I don't know how they figured it out but they did. It just came natural to them. Having separate nesting and roosting areas is SOOOOOO nice! I really enjoy the separate areas and I think they do as well.

Hopefully, you see something that you can use. I will post more pics of things that have been built over this last week.

is anyone in louisiana, near the new orleans/slidell area selling any pullets? please let me know

also does anyone in this area have really good coop ideas since the heat?

I am in the New Orleans area (Westbank), and occasionally have pullets available. Usually just straight run chicks. I also organize the chicken sale in Covington at O'Keefe's Feed, and our next one is Sunday March 24, then there is another swap on the first Sunday of the month in Hammond. There is generally an assortment of birds available. There are swaps in Pearl River and Watson as well, but I don't attend those as they are on Saturdays, so I can't say how they are. If you are on Facebook, here's the Covington group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/294697733934637/.

And as far as coops, I have pics of some of mine on my page: https://www.facebook.com/BrandisFancyFeathers.
I try to make my coops as open as possible to avoid overheating and promote a lot of air circulation.

Glad to see several new New Orleans area people! I haven't been on here much lately, but I am trying to check in more often!

I suppose when it comes to fuzzy butts I am a total sucker. I had d'uccles that were lost in transit Friday so I intervened and drove to Alexandria to pick them up after work. We ran in tractor supply there since I was getting low on feed. Naturally my daughter spies the chick/duckling bins. As if we don't have enough already and as if I haven't already said that ducklings are terribly nasty in the brooder...daughter spotted a crested in one of the bins. Ten minutes later we were in the truck with a lonely crested duckling. Why can't I say no to fuzzy butts? Since that ride home Aflac has imprinted on her and will not leave her side. If we put it in the brooder it causes a ruckus until someone returns to get it. It will climb in your shirt if you hold it and snuggle in your armpits. *sigh* So I now have a duckling running rampant through the house behind my daughter. How will I ever keep this house clean that way?

Daughter is happy as a clam!
So cute!

Hi everybody, I have shoveling poop out of the barn all weekend and am exhausted, it took a pick ax in some places to get down to the sand layer. LOL Welcome to the new folks and great pictures everyone! Congratulations on the lamb and all the fuzzy buts. Boy that fat legged chicken gave me nightmares! LOL On another note, the Midget Whites a got from Flocksalot, hatched Friday and what feisty little fuzzy buts they are! At one day old, they are were already working on pecking order, pulling each other's beaks! The eggs were shipped from MN. last month in some really bad weather, and I got 11 poults out of 16 eggs. For shipped eggs I think that's great! I highly recommend her if you are looking for Midget Whites. She is a very nice, reliable and reasonable person. I have been 100% satisfied! Here are the new poults: Sorry I take lousy pictures because I can't hold the camera still, but they are healthy and lively! Out on the 11, I think 4 are hens and 7 are toms, But time will tell. I banded their legs. Hope everyone enjoyed their weekend, it's suppose to rain tonight and tomorrow! Oh well, I need a break!LOL
Congrats on the babies. They are so cute!!!

Wayne, the jelly was DELICIOUS! What time will you be getting to the swap on Saturday? I will be needing at least 2 jars of each flavor if you have them! If you could hold onto them for me that would be great. This is what I woke up to find Saturday morning! While I was hoping for a girl, he sure is a handsome little guy!
Oh my Oh my! I think I just fell in love with this little guy!!! Beautiful!!! Congrats!
Congrats!!! Beautiful !!!
