"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Since you are a newbie, why not get one of the heavy layer assortments from Ideal? You will get a variety of birds that will lay you plenty of eggs. If you order the heavy layers, you can also put them in the gumbo pot if you decide you don't like them. Once you figure out which ones you like (we can help you identify breeds once they feather out), you can get on the road to getting more chicks/eggs of your favorite breed!

This is the link to the heavy layer assortment. Most will lay brown eggs:

This is a link to what I would can an "anything and everything" assortment. You would have the possibility of getting all kinds of egg colors from these:
https://secuservices.com/ideal/newideal/selectproduct.aspx?qty=1&ID=ACP&Product=671

As mentioned, these will not be show quality, but they have never sent me anything besides exactly what I ordered. It is a good jumping off point for those who don't know exactly what they want yet.
That is a fabulous idea! This is why I love the forum. You guys give great advice. Would it be advisable to get ten from the heavy layer and ten from the everything assortment? I absolutely love chicken gumbo, so I believe I won't end with twenty chickens.

Gracie is right. Clicking on the 1st link and seeing those birds is exactly what my chicken yard looks like and I LOVE IT. I have both brown layers and meat. I collect an average of 10 dozen eggs every single day. So you can't go wrong with any of those breeds.

In my area, the brown layers are in popular demand and have always been. I am getting more and more customers who are looking for chicken to provide meat and eggs for their family and they are looking for these same breeds. I don't have anyone in my area who is looking for the "show birds". There interest is being self sufficient for their family. If I could handle more animals, I would order about 100 brown egg layers (pullets) and re-sell as hen and charge $20.00 per pullet at POL (point of laying).

Are there any breeds in particular that are your favorites?
That's quite good business! Everyone around me who is interested in chickens normally goes to farmers who have hybrid barn chickens.

Good morning peeps. Early day here. As I sit outside with my coffee, I hear a guinny. Sorry for the spelling. To eariy. Have a great day.
Good morning! I've got my coffee but haven't gotten outside yet. I hope to have a productive day building a pen for my ducks.

Speaking of guineas, anyone raise white or lavendar guineas? I used to have a few lavendars but my dogs killed them. I'd really like some lavendars again.

Hello! I'm new to the forum and live in southern louisiana. I was wondering where you guys get chicks from. Are there several reputable places or breeders here, or is it more of a gotta know someone network? I currently have a flock but am interested in raising some chicks when the current ones grow. I hate to order online because shipping is so stressful. I'd much rather be able to pick up chicks.

Has anyone seen this video? The reporters are all excited about twins foals born on Easter. While that is all fine and dandy, check out the condition of the mare. Just sad!

That is so sad! The foals are just as cute as they can be but momma definitely needs some TLC.

So proud of my honey, today she got out of her comfort zone and helped me process 5 chickens. Some of which will be tonight's supper. We just raise a few mutts for eggs and meat. We do have some nice silver penciled rocks those will not be eaten. I will be starting a new be hatching a new set so we can rotate out every 6 months or so. I hope to build a mini fridge incubator soon so we do everything in 1 cabinet. This is turning out to be lots of fun. Plus good eating !

Evening everyone! Long day today at the chicken swap in DeRidder. First thing this morning chickens and guineas got loose from someone near me. Silly guineas were smart enough to run through the field. Poor chicken didn't quite make it crossing the road.

Then I went to the auction in Anacoco for the afternoon. Saw lots of people I've chatted with both here and on facebook. It's always nice to be able to put a face to the name.

My daughter actually made fun of me all day. Primrose comes up to me and says, "I talk to you online--I'm Primrose." I say, "Oh! I'm chickenbelle!" My daughter is walking around like, "My mother is a total online chicken geek!"

She swears we all need therapy. I told her that nope, SHE just needed some kind of instruction manual with all of our Secret Chicken Code Screen Names to be able to identify us all.
I went to sell birds I decided not to keep or didn't have orders for. Came home with ANOTHER duck.

Sucker? *sigh* I suppose. Dear daughter knows how to work me. Now the poor earring swallower has a girlfriend. They swam together with their necks all entwined and preened one another happily. I thought for a brief moment that I could see little red hearts floating above their heads.
