"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

That's what I'm thinking. Thanks for the input. My girls have been panting in their nesting boxes this week and I'm thinking the new coop needed better air flow. I'm excited about our new coop. We've been working since Easter on it (with a few breaks here and there) but the chickies need a home!

Coop looks great!

I'm loving the puppies! They are growing beautifully.

In case anyone is new to d'Uccles--those sweet little boys are quite ornery little teens! My grown roos are all very well behaved, but my two porcelain boys just hit puberty and have gotten overly protective. For such a small little guy, Bo certainly bites like a pit bull! I had to pry his beak off yesterday. Now I'm sporting a bruised and cut hand. Gotta love raising birdies.

Is there such a thing as too much ventilation in a Louisiana coop? I have two sides of my 4X8 coop that have 1-2 foot hardware cloth at the top of the walls and am thinking of the 3rd wall with at least a foot or so also. The 4th wall (one of the 8 foot) will be all wood. I will be getting plexiglass to put up in the winter as I've done for the small windows on our other coop. Do you think I could keep it uncovered in the winter except for freezing cold? We have 9 LF and one fiesty cochin. I'm hoping to have this coop finished this week!Opinions?

I don't have an answer because I'm a newbie, but I have to say that the coop is beautiful!!!!

Okay. My Ameracauna babies are 4 weeks old, close to 5 weeks. The gray one is clearly a girl. Is the dark on a roo? I hope hope hope not, but the comb does seem to be changing darker and a little rougher. Or maybe it got pecked or dirty? (grasping at straws LOL). I tried wiping it off with spit LOL and maybe my imagination thought some of the dark came off.

It's hard for me to tell with certainty because the pic doesn't enlarge much on the mobile version, but it sure looks like your dark chick has 3 defined rows of "peas" on the comb now. If so, it is a boy.

The coop looks great! My first coop is closed in (but has good ventilation), but my others are all open air.

You inspired me to take down the sides of the coop. I'll put the fan out soon, too, and even the frozen soda bottles. I think summer is here!

Thanks mzstre. It DOES have 3 defined rows of "peas" on the comb. So, I have a boy. I'll have to rehome, but I think I may wait a little bit so the other one isn't by herself until she gets a little bigger. Is that a good idea? I'll see if ssterling wants him back and if not, someone came over yesterday that really wants him, so he will get a very good home no matter what. Also ssterling may be able to sell me a girl about Lizzie's age (4 or 5 weeks).

It is most definitely a silkie mix. You can tell by the ear lobes and the fact that he has five toes on at least one foot. Now what it is mixed with could be anyone's guess! Maybe mixed with Marans?
Thanks for the info... and yes she has all 10 toes.. silky/maran cross so i am assuming that she will be one good broody hen. I hope so, i will be nice to have another natural incubator.

To all my BYC-ers and LA-ers with pea fowl... I have heard and laughed at the stories of what happens when they decide to go visiting neighbors and etc. and how they fly to tops of buildings and trees. BUT NO ONE EVER SAID THEY COULD RUN LIKE A CHEETAH

. One is loose out here at work and we tried for about 30 minutes to catch her. I think she was laughing at us the whole time, finally she got tired of playing and went flying into the wooded area next to here.... Any advice now???? Besides new running shoes...

Now I know how the coyote felt every time he chased the roadrunner...
