"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Kuntrygirl, this summer I would sometimes go to a fresh fruit stand. One day I asked about thrown out veggies for my chickens. and they said I could take whatever I wanted from the boxes in back. I don't give my chickens spoiled food, but to my surprise I couldn't even tell why they threw out most of the food. Maybe the shape? Anyway I got lots of fresh not spoiled food for my chickens that I also enjoyed. To be a good customer I did always buy some from him , too.
What a great idea! I'm going to look into that around me!!!

Not sure why I share this, except I'm feeling a little bitter sweet (crying like a baby). There are two horses that I feed morning and night that live just down the road a little ways. Their owners live in New Orleans and the people that were supposed to be caring for them were not. So, I ended up taking over their feedings several years ago. These are two OLD palominos. One in his 20's and the other approaching 35!! We knew his time was coming, and yesterday he didn't come running up for his feed like he normally does. Again, the same thing last night. It's his time. I called his owner, the vet and the trac hoe guy for burial. The vet and his owner are there now. He's not my horse, but he's been there for as long as I can remember. Swayback Sandy. He's had a good life, a long life. Poor Odie his pasture mate for all these years. I feel so sad and so silly, because he HAS had such a good life.

I haven't checked it out yet...but it sounded interesting.  I got a magazine  called Mother Earth News.  It was the How to Grow and Preserve Your Own Food one.  I got it at Sams Club.  There's an article on Organic Pest Control  haven't gone to site to look yet, but here it is:  www.motherearthnews.com/pest-control-series  Again, haven't gone to look at it yet.

I read Mother Earth news. My MIL would visit an she would put cloves an bay leaves all over my kitchen & bath counter tops. My DH said it was for bugs. I didn't have bugs DH said just let her do it. Come to find out from ME News cloves were for black ants and bay leaves were for silver fish. I've never seen silver fish around here. Have seen the black ants . They don't like cloves for some reason. P

I wonder if the cloves and bay leaves work for the crazy ants that are taking over. :barnie

Question for you canning experts.........

When canning tomatoes/salsa, etc. do you add "additives or preserves" to the food to help it with preserving? Is there such a thing as "natural preserving" and not having to use anything besides the fruit or vegetable that you are canning?

And exactly how long can preserves/canned foods last? 20 years? 30 years? 50 years?

If you google feeding chickens you can get a list of food chickens can't have. I use to make my own feed before I found organic feed.

Sorry to here about the horse. I had horses growing up. I got attached to horses that we didn't own. He was lucky to have you care for him. p
