"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Update on my girls. They definitely have fowl pox. The wounded girl has it the most severely around her eyes. I'm topically treating them with hydrogen peroxide, and I've added Terramycin to their water in case of wet pox, but so far I haven't seen any signs of that. Unfortunately they seem worse now in the second to third week of it. Is that normal?

Bummer! How long have they had the meds in there water? Maybe it will take a while to work.

My youngest and I took a close look at 3 of the hens Friday evening. I couldn't find 1 lice!!! I'm going to re apply on the correct day anyway just in case any eggs might hatch.

Not so happy this afternoon. Woke my son up this morning, around 6 a.m., told him to go clean out the pools for the ducks. They had teacher I service this morning so I figured, hey, save me some time, I can get to work early. This evening at around 6:30, I come home to a flooded yard. Yep, over 12 hours of water running full blast! His chore list just increased 10 fold...

Oh no! I've done that with the hose at the barn before!
I bet the ducks like it!

I came across this article that absolutely fascinated me! I happen to have annatto seeds because I use them to naturally color soap. But now I think I may crush some and feed them to the chickens and see what happens to the color of their egg yolks! I know I always associated a darker yellow colored yolk with it being a higher quality egg..........maybe that was not a correct assumption.

The fowl pox is a herpes simplex virus and no amount of antibiotics is going to cure it. Antibiotics is for the secondary infection if they happen to get one. The virus has to run its course like cold sores, cankers what have you. Pullets usually are more susceptable at POL (puberty) it is a form of Mareks too and this is when they are more prone to developing the symptoms. Mosquitos can transmit the virus but it is just whether or not the immunity of the bird lets show up or not(timing) it is everywhere and no way to avoid it. Its in the air and every itty bitty sparrow or mocking bird ect.. has been in contact with it too (and this is where Mother Nature comes in to play "the strong survive the weak perish") deal you can vaccinate all you want if so desired but more than likely most still will get it some never even show signs and most will get over it on their own unless they get a secondary infection which you may cure with meds or not some just aren't meant to be here.

my last flock had RIR chickens and Easter eggers. At that time there was no commercial organic food available to me.
I found a recipe on the internet to make my own feed I wanted organic eggs. So they ate the same food and free ranged the same property. RIR'S had deep orange yolks and the Easter eggers bright yellow.
