"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I might have found a routine that works with Horn Dog Harry. I have been keeping him in one of my stalls during the day and at night. In the afternoon, when I'm outside, I turn him loose with the hens. They are all able to roam together. This seems to be working. I keep a broom in easy grabbing distance for the kids to use if needed. Harry seems to be "learning" the routine and other than fussing at me, he's keeping a respectful distance. Any thoughts? Is there anything I'm missing? Is this too cruel for Harry to be living this way? His other option is freezer camp. When everyone goes into the coop for the night, I catch him and carry him back to the barn stall. He's getting easier to catch and carry.

Well, it beats the alternative (freezer camp) so far.
I don’t know why, but right now I have three roos (first time I’ve had more than one that I kept until maturity) & all of them are OK. I leave them alone, they leave me alone. Prior to now, I’ve always kept one roo & that one has always turned mean at some point & ended up as “gator bait”. I’m wondering if it’s because I have three of them – they have each other to pick on & so leave me alone.

Silver is most definitely the head roo, Red is 2nd & Pigeon is low man on the totem pole. I don’t see them fighting a whole lot, now & then a little flareup but Silver always keeps the other two in their place. He’s my Cuckoo Marans – all of them that I ever had have been laid-back chickens. I got rid of the roos from my 1st hatch at an early age so I don’t really know if they would’ve turned mean eventually or not.

But my Welsummer roos have ALWAYS turned mean eventually – except the two I have now. I don’t pick them up or do anything special to them. I tried the stick thing w/the last 2 Wellie roos I had – a bright yellow broomstick – but if they ever caught me without it, they would come after me if I turned my back on them. So that didn’t work for me.

Could try these...

I think that's a great idea. He is still roaming with his crew, so he is good. Nothing cruel about that. Harry may make a 360 degree turn around and surprise you all.

He visited the wrong house.

I've been thinking...(no smart comments)...Is it like the wild west at your house? Do you walk around with a sidearm strapped to your hip or thigh? I could run and grab a bb gun, but by the time I figured out I needed the gun, ran, got gun and bullets, then loaded whatever was after my animals would have dined, had desert and sent me a thank you card!

Hahahaha

:yuckyuck :lau Welllllllllllllllllll, since you asked (*clears throat*), yes I do walk around with a sidearm strapped to my hip AND thigh AND ankle. I have to be ready for anything and at any time. I keep 1 fire arm (loaded) and ammo in the feed storage room and I can get to it within 2 minutes of seeing my target and another fire arm and ammo at the back door in the house in the kitchen. If I want to turn it into a hide and seek game and want to give the target a chance to get away so that I can find it and take it out, then I will run (running makes it more exciting) in the house to get the fire arm that is propped up against the wall in the kitchen at the back door. It's always fun every now and then to play a game a cat and mouse (with of course me being the cat). ;) The fire arm at the back door is also used for 2 legged creatures who chose to venture off onto the krazy chicken lady's property and who have psychotic/hallucinating thoughts that they are about to attack and harm a sweet little quiet well mannered girl like me ;). This situation turns into "Since you're coming to harm me, I"m gonna harm you" kinda game. This allows me to do a covert operation and roll around on the ground and crawl into my bunker to hide and then crawl right out and climb into my kitchen window to grab "Big Bertha" only to climb right out of the kitchen window back into my bunker to sit and wait for the target and to shoot them in the knee so that I can detain them and beat the day lights out of them while waiting on the Sheriff to arrive. :D I"m ALWAYS ready. ;) :gig
