"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

She is just so pretty! With my broody hens hatch she dedicated herself to mothering them for 10 weeks, went back to laying for 5 days, decided to be broody for a day and then remembered she already had chicks and stopped sitting to fret over them again. :idunno Not an egg since, silly girl. Her teenagers don't want to be fussed over anymore.

Is it common to not lay even when she no longer sits on them? I would love to experience a broody hen doing her whole thing.

This is my first time hatching with a broody also so I can't speak from experience, but I have read in other threads that they normally don't lay again until the kids grow up some, often a month or more. All that I know is that Lucy is a great mom and took her precious time. Now only if she would get back to business again.... again.

Uhhhhh.......I guess until.....I don't know. Lol. I guess I will know when the time is right. Maybe when they all are perching instead of her warming and cuddling them. They should be pretty independent when they can keep themselves warm.

This is my first experience with a broody instead of a brooder.

Enjoy it. Remember that winter brings reduced egg production anyway so don't worry about the amount of time unless they are not feathered when she lets them go.

Yes it is. They start laying when they stop raising the chicks. This is part of the reason that you give her chick or all flock feed instead of layer. The other reason is because if the chicks are hungry she will drop the closest feed down to them and you don't want them getting layer too soon. I will never use a brooder again! I am a broody convert with a very good broody momma.

Good Tuesday morning (almost lunch) EVERYONE!!!  What beautiful fall weather it is today!!  I love the slight breeze.

Apparently the roosters did not get the memo about the time change.  4:30 in the morning wake up call.  Then after I was good and awake......they went back to sleep for awhile.  Hahaha!  Turkeys!

I made a big score this morning :yiipchick   I am sure by now you have figured out that I love cheap or free.  On my way home from Tractor Supply and the Feed store I pass a church that has a "Pumpkin Patch" every fall.  Its more for Halloween than for the fall season in general.  I noticed that all the pallets and decorations were gone and only leftover pumpkins sitting around.  So I went and asked at the office and got us and the chickens some FREE pumpkins!!!  WooHOO!!!  They all have some marks of some sort, like scarring from a scrape or something like that.  But WHO CARES!!!  :woot

Eleven of these pretty orange pumpkins.

Good score on the pumkins!

I did have to kill a black widow spider on one before I moved it

That kind of caught me off guard. Glad I saw it though. And I don't even want to know who saw me rolling them down the little hill to the car. I was giving them gentle nudges with my foot. They probably thought I was a bit off, lol.

But FREE is FREE. That's what hubby always says.

My youngest gave me an early birthday present Saturday morning...his VIRUS!!! My boys brought me "birthday flowers" Sunday with a pack of BeeCool forhead gels in them. I'm up and moving...not running! I'm trying to drag myself outside to the barn, as I've got 7 stalls to clean. Also, need to scoop out the coop. It's days like this that I don't appreciate all the work that comes along with the animals.

The virus was good for a loss of 5 lbs, always good to go into the holiday season down a few...that's about the only positive.

Hope all is well with everyone.

KuntryGirl has been online, just not our forum...I wonder what's wrong?

I HATE SPIDERS!!!! We still get black widow spiders from time to time, but they are pretty easy to find. Their webs are very "sticky", almost like cotton candy. Once you've felt one, you will never forget! I always feel the web, if it's a black widow web, I get out heavy chemicals and ask questions later.

I bet you were a sight rolling the pumpkins! I missed out on the schools pumpkins, because I was down sick! So ticked off!! My girls LOVE pumpkin!

Well I guess all it took for our lone Mottled Houdan to start laying was for new to threaten her with the freezer! We got a Nice small white egg today. Our first white egg in years.
Could you have a "talk" with my two GLP? Please? Also, my white Dot? (We're not sure what Dot is, she's black and white, small, fast, but curious...look, but don't touch)! Almost sounds like the start of a joke...
I would like some cream colored eggs!
