"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

That's what I've been told by the nurseries I have tried to find one at. When I was young they were all over the place. All my relatives had them in their yard. Now I don't know anyone that has a pecan tree. Pam
They have pecan trees at the nurseries in Forest Hill or did last spring at tomato planting time I have a bunch of native pecans(small ones) from Simmesport area if you would like to plant some and see if they will grow? the cold early springs are messing with the pecan trees I imagine they are some of the first to leaf out and the last few late frost throws them out of sequence.IMO

Does anyone know if pawpaw fruit trees grow well in Louisiana? I hear the fruit looks like a guava and tastes like a banana? I have some seeds, but it says they do best in partial shade? The oranges are starting to ripen, since we got some cold. Second year for the Mandarin and the tree is only about 4 feet high and has stakes in the ground to hold the branches up or the fruit would be laying on the ground! LOL It will be the first fruit on the navel but they are in one little cluster on the west side, while the east side is, rather was, blooming! Is that normal? The Satsuma died 3 years in a row and we replanted. This was the third year for this one, but no fruit yet. It bloomed, but never set fruit. It is close to the house in partial shade, Should we dig it up and move it to full sun? Hubby wants one of those loose skin Satsuma. I think he said they were called Becknell's?
i don't remember the name of our satsuma tree but we got it from Clyde Holloway's nursery in Forest Hill years ago & it is "loose -skinned". it gets the morning sun until about noon but during the heat of summer it is shaded by our fig trees. All of our citrus are shielded from the north by our cedar fence.

Our pecans did nothing this year for the first time in my memory -- combination of the spring drought & it was an "off' year (last year they bore heavily - pecans have off and on years). but never have we had NO pecans at all! this is a first. my folks did have some so we have enough for the freezer for 2014. Really strange.

I know it takes a lot strawberries to make jam & plan on getting some from Inglewood - these are just for "fresh" eating!

NOTHING like fresh sparkling strawberries! Yum!

I have a Blood Orange that is my husbands actually. We have had it for 4 years and just this summer got 10 oranges. They sure were pretty to look at on the tree! We also have an Improved Meyer Lemon and a Variegated Lemon. The Meyer we had lemons from the start, but the Variegated has been a pain in the rump! Its foliage is so SO pretty but it keeps having this problem...........the new leaves come out cream color, then change as they get a little older. But some keep getting this brown crispy areas then the leaves drop. I am tempted to just rip the tree out and plant a new one. But I probably will try to ID what the problem is and treat it first. I would love to have pretty striped Lemons!

I would love to try but I don't know how far that is form me I'm in st Tammany . I'm not familiar with Simmesport area. Pam

Lemon go to LSU agriculture web site and look for Dan Gill's section. He has all kinds of info on citrus. Or listen to him sat. Morning on WWL A.M. Radio between 7 to 9 am. This guy knows his stuff about insect and fungal problems. Good luck!

I just looked up your paw paw tree I have never heard of it before. I found out its one of few fruits native to America. It grew as far south as fla. It likes partial sun and you need to have two for pollination. Has a flavor of vanilla banana custard. Very interesting let me know how it grows for you!!
My friend just gave me a couple of papaya seedlings on the south shore they grow and bear fruit. I'm hoping to do the same on the north shore.Pam

No I'm even further than Avoyelles parish from you (another 100mi east) I'd have to mail them send me your addy by PM if you don't want it publicly broadcast which is very understandable this day and time for sure. I just figure the pecans should be from around about the same climate as yours.
