We had a very busy, but productive day here at home. Hubby was inspired to clean/organize the shed. Awesome! He also made another soap mold that I had gotten the parts for. Yay! It was so nice and warm today........I went out to check on the goings on outside and had a run in with the "corner RAT"

So the story with this rat is that hubby saw it about 10 days ago. Seems we have not been too successful at catching or dispatching pests lately. But that's not for lack of trying. Hub moved some wood to get at a ladder and had that nasty varmit looking up at him. Na-s-ty!! It RAN! A couple of days later I was out there and heard some chewing. I must have the best ears in the family, because no one else heard it. We though it was UNDER the shed, so we moved a couple of blocks, baited the trap and fixed things up. The only thing we caught is air and empty bait. The cat though caught a couple of mice that were springing the trap and eating the bait then squeezing out. Cat 2-Mice 0 Obviously the rat was NOT under the shed. Today again I heard the darn CHEWING!!! ARG! No noise on earth could be more annoying! Hubby went after it and we saw it again. Rat (what count is he up to?-Us 0 Once again the trap is baited and set. Hopefully this time in a better position to catch it. I am just glad that all the chickens food is secured. And I am actually surprised that the rat is hanging out clear on the opposite side of the yard as the chickens and the compost. if he went over there he would be having the time of his life and would probably look like Templeton after the Fair (Charlottes Web). Well, wish me luck folks and pray someday soon we can move somewhere that firearms instead of stinkin' traps can be used for these situations.

My dog caught and killed a big rat yesterday. She was so proud of herself. I was proud of her too. I had noticed that every time I let them out they run straight to the wood pile trying to flush something out of hiding. Must be their favorite home. I feed the wild birds I love bird watching. Only draw back is rats and raccoons and flying squirrels want the feed as much as the birds. My German Shepherds help keep the varmints out of it.

One of the new chicks I bought at the feed store is a bantam. I've never had one before. There were only 3 chicks I couldn't leave her behind a chick with no flock. They didn't tell me the breed I've called them to find out hopefully they'll call me back. This tiny little chick is so sweet. When I bought her I thought I'd rehome her to some one with bantams. Now I think her sweet personality landed her a forever home.Pam

Do fig trees get spots on the leaves this time of year?

A couple of spots here and there is normal. I would expect some leaf damage with the freeze we had.Pam

Do you have a sign out front or did he just mosey on up and ask? If he's had them he should know people don't just hand them out. Lol Our dog makes a great judge n jury
Sucks about the robberies, stay safe. We talk about bad situations possibly happening and what we'd do, have plans for some possibilities and plan on winging any others. Hubby has ran off a thief before and it was intense. We are "leave me be, I'll leave you be - mess with me it's on" kinda people.
Besides, they'd be dummies to give us a threatening target
My big toys hardly get the play they deserve...

NO he said He moved from Texas and had to leave all he chickens there. So I should give him a few to get him started again. Been having a bunch of robberies in this area, praying he was scooping my place out. My dogs met him at the gate before me as they always do.

Some citrus takes five years to bear a good crop of fruit. Mine are in full sun.i have navel, Persian lime, key lime,Mayer lemon, Lisbon lemon, and I just planted cooking pear and apple pear. I'm trying to find a pecan tree haven't had any luck finding one. Pam

No one's pecan trees did good the last 2 years in my area. Not sure what went wrong. We used to have so much that we would have to sell them, now it's not even enough for holiday baking.

I hope that my pecan trees do well this year. I want pecan candy.

Does anyone know if pawpaw fruit trees grow well in Louisiana? I hear the fruit looks like a guava and tastes like a banana? I have some seeds, but it says they do best in partial shade? The oranges are starting to ripen, since we got some cold. Second year for the Mandarin and the tree is only about 4 feet high and has stakes in the ground to hold the branches up or the fruit would be laying on the ground! LOL It will be the first fruit on the navel but they are in one little cluster on the west side, while the east side is, rather was, blooming! Is that normal? The Satsuma died 3 years in a row and we replanted. This was the third year for this one, but no fruit yet. It bloomed, but never set fruit. It is close to the house in partial shade, Should we dig it up and move it to full sun? Hubby wants one of those loose skin Satsuma. I think he said they were called Becknell's?

i don't remember the name of our satsuma tree but we got it from Clyde Holloway's nursery in Forest Hill years ago & it is "loose -skinned". it gets the morning sun until about noon but during the heat of summer it is shaded by our fig trees. All of our citrus are shielded from the north by our cedar fence.

Our pecans did nothing this year for the first time in my memory -- combination of the spring drought & it was an "off' year (last year they bore heavily - pecans have off and on years). but never have we had NO pecans at all! this is a first. my folks did have some so we have enough for the freezer for 2014. Really strange.

I know it takes a lot strawberries to make jam & plan on getting some from Inglewood - these are just for "fresh" eating!

Terri, I have some of your last year's pecans this weekend. They are still delicious.
