"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

This one is a hoax I think :( but I hope a bullet finds its way in to an assaulter. This "game" needs to stop. And full hardcore punishments need to be passed out for their behavior. So disgusting these kids find it fun and ok.

Maybe the author wanted to scare these punks away from the more vulnerable?

At the moment I am down to 1 Buff Orpington hen.

Something get a hold of your flock, or just starting? I had a BO hen but something got her a few weeks ago.

You know, when my girls were in molt I thought I had fighters (first molt ever) because everything was covered in feathers. I have been keeping track of the molting contest and am thankful mine didn't go bare like that. Is it normal for them to be that naked in a molt? They look like they were plucked while still alive.

Mine have lost tons of feathers, but they mostly look normal except they look thinner. Yesterday I thought: oh no my chickens have lost weight, then I remembered they have lost lots of feathers, not body weight. Lol

I had bought 2 BO hens(Rosie & Izzy) & Izzy mysteriously had some sort of virus or something. My wife asked me to take Izzy to the vet, so I did & he said whatever Izzy had, she wouldn't recover from, so he put her down. Then I replaced her with another BO hen(Chloe) & bought a Black Sexed Link hen(Gerdy) as well. I found Chloe dead in the run with no visible signs of being attacked or harmed in anyway. Gerdy just one day was laying in the run & not moving at all, just laying there, which was odd because she was real skiddish. Gerdy ended up dying about an hour later, just stopped breathing. She also had no visible signs of being attacked or harmed. I just wonder if it was something they all had gotten for the local feed store I bought them from.

I'm not an expert, but I can tell you what I've learned from the many experts on this thread: when you add to your flock, always keep the new ones separate from your existing flock for a week or two until you are sure there are no health issues either way. Your new ones could have gotten what your original hen died from. I have a nice sized wire dog kennel which is easy to sanitize that serves as my isolation pen. I put in corner food and water containers and a perch. I put pine shavings on the bottom. If one of my flock acts sick I will isolate her from the others. If you get more, plan an isolation place for them for a little while. Also it shouldn't be close to the others bec some illnesses can pass through the air. What ground is your coop on?? Was it fertilized?? Any chemicals you can think of? And, sometimes they just die, but once my girls where stable where they stay, their health has been good.

My coop ground was just a spot in the backyard. No fertilizer was used on the ground & no chemicals were used anywhere near the coop. I honestly believe it had to be something they picked up from the feed store, (atlest Izzy & Gerdy). As for Chloe, it could possibly be that she just died. I don't know, but I do need to get Rosie some company & I thank you for your advice on isolating the new hens when I get them, I never thought about that.

Hello from Joe. I joined BYC back in April, so kinda new here & also new to this forum. Just wanted to drop in & say hi to my fellow Louisianians.

Welcome Joe! I hope you can get a few more girls that last there. Sorry for the loss of the new girls you got and your older girl. Sometimes they just pass. If the new girls had a problem from the feed store than I wouldn't worry about it, but if they didn't I would start looking at a virus. Talk to the people at the feed store and see if they have had any problems with loosing the ones they are caring for before they sell them all.

Hi welcome to the La-yers. Sorry to hear about your flock . As primrose said alway isolate first. You should go to your feed store or tractor supply and buy some meds to keep on hand. Antibiotic , blue coat, betadine, latex gloves, gauze etc. I've found from advice on this forum and experience I've had the quicker you act the better chance of survival. If your planing on using the same coup clean it . I would use bleach and water. Then I would leave it empty till I didn't smell any bleach any more. Good luck! Pam
