"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Sorry, couldn't tell you the first thing about your duck other then it's a cutie.  Spring of '12 my daughter hatched a dozen pure mallard (captive) eggs.  Hatched out the prettiest little black and yellow mess-makers.  All were slick headed except one.  Every feather on its head stood straight up like this birds.  From the moment it dried off from hatching till the ducks moved on at about 1 month those feathers were up.  It was the cutest little duck you'd ever lay eyes on.  We like to look at ducks but my daughter said ducks were 1 and done.  They are messy.  Happy New Year.

DEFINITELY MESSY! They free range in area about 30' wide and 180' long and it's gotten much lower/muddier since the ducks. Gonna hang on till summer..maybe.. Then have some dirt hauled in, then decide from there. Chickens still on strike, so they are the only egg layers right now. HAPPY NEW YEAR to you as well, and to all!

Just curious if there is any interest from the LA Lay-ers.  I've been corresponding on the Capon thread and did the procedure on two young birds a week ago this past Sat.  Both birds have recovered well and never really missed a beat.  Seeing how young roosters are always available for free, including this thread on BYC that is ad after ad of free roos.  https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/16182/animals-in-need-of-free-re-homing  Would there be any interest for a get-together to discuss and demonstrate the lost art of Caponizing??

we have been interested in learning how to do it. we don't have any roosters right now.

Bungglesmommy I was wondering if you have pea fowl?

I am interested in learning about peacocks. I have lived several places were I would hear then calling all hours of the day and most of all as the sun would bowed to the horizon. Never seen but heard. I really loved lessoning to them. We had a wild peacock in Brandon, 1 wild and willy peacock and several pea hens. My neighbor told me that ever so often there is a peacock hunt to trap them. But this one male they have never been able to catch. I guess the last trapping session was very successful, he said they thought they had all the hens and all the juveniles. He then said about the time I moved in a pea hen showed up. Half the people hated then the other half loved them. All the trapped peafowl were found a new home by the people that love them, so no harm to come to them by (I guess) the chief peacock hater.

:/ Except no one is in between on pea fowl.... Love them or you hate them.

I got to take some pics of a few of our young mixed chickens today.

This little Lavender Am/Silkie mix is a roo. So far he has been super sweet and his pattern of dark and light on his feathers is really cool.

And check out this random feather with a light tan color on it. I wonder if he will get more of these in after his first molt. We are probably going to find this one a new home or a soup pot if need be.

And I love that ones feathered legs and feet! ^^^^^

This little sweet fluff is our favorite! We don't even care that it is a mixed breed. We have been going on the assumptions that it is a "HE" because of the color of the comb and his little waddles. He has more and more of the reddish color coming in between all of his feathers that are in already. I just cannot wait to see how he turns out. And it would be a great surprise if it was a hen. We call him Jazzie. He is super spunky and energetic. We all want to keep this sweet thing. Aren't his little feathers sticking straight up just the funniest looking??

Pattered feathers on his neck.....the new colored feathers coming in are much redder though.

And a seriously fluffy little butt!

I don't have them but when I was growing up the lady down the street had them. I liked them back then my town was a sleepy little town. The lady that owned them also had a chimp, chicken, geese, Arabian horses, etc. The noise didn't bother me or my family it was just country noise. Their are 3 people on this site that i know of that have them. Kunteygirl, Terrielachicks, and buggles.

What a beautiful color pattern. The longer you look at him, the more you notice all the color variations.
