Mine have free access to food because they were rescues with food issues. The first month I had them I went threw about 4 50# sacs because they were taking it and hiding it all over the place. Once they figured out that it stays full they stopped it. Now they take a few bites when they are hungry or I refill the bowl (must taste better when refilled???), but they don't over eat.I agree. It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out you're feeding your animal too much long before that point. That much feeding isn't love so much as cruel. No animal can be comfortable in that condition. I actually have to feed in the opposite direction. My shepherd does not hold weight well. She needs a high protein active dog diet. It's not too hard to watch your animals condition and feed accordingly.

I am getting just a FEW! Plus the eggs in the bator. But we are down to 2 birds in the freezerThat is not cool now that I know how tasty the homegrown ones are. I would love to do organic feed for my meat birds but I don't know if there is a reasonably priced organic feed in Alexandria. And I don't know if hubby would spring for the price. All my chickens have always done so well on the feed from Petrus. My layers lay more eggs and look healthier (prettier feathers) with that food than on any other kinds we have tried.
BTW that last chicken we cooked we did in the crock pot. Seriously people. Seriously. That was the most tender, juicy and succulent chicken meat I have ever eaten......even the white meat (I usually prefer the dark meat). We ate some then made the rest into chicken noodle soup using broth we made from the smoked turkey carcass from Thanksgiving. Oh my heavens!!! It was crazy good. I am glad that it made a bunch and I have 3 1/2 pints of it in the freezer for a cold day.
Other random food facts from this year. We are so happy that we bought that box of sweet potatoes back in the fall. I had used the pressure cooker to "put them up" as the old timers say. They are so, so wonderful and I will be making sure we do that again next fall. Except I probably will buy them when the grocer has them on sale because that roadside stand was too pricey. We also are totally sold on our homemade and canned sauerkraut, chili, plain pinto beans (so you can use them as we like), plain applesauce and cranberry sauce. There are some things we WON'T BE MAKING AGAIN. Bleck on some of those things we tried![]()

We finished up making a new batch of the sauerkraut this evening. The recipe calls for 25lbs of shredded cabbage. Super 1 had it on sale for 25cents a lb. Now that is going to be some cheap sauerkraut since the only other ingredient is a cup of the canning salt. Yippee!!! Stinky Pantry starting in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...................
Kewl beans, I'd like it to pay for itself and the next order of chicks and still be affordable for families to have fresh, free ranged meat. We went all over and priced chicken everywhere, from generic to top brand...top shelf prices were stupid ridiculously high and generic chicken looked half frozen globs of meat. Even the top shelf bird except one brand had up to 15% added "juice" Ick. We weighed them before opening packages and after and we were paying for water (or juice) I'd never use in a stock.
Next batches feed will be organic and a batch for spring we will go organic and free range will be soooo plentiful due to the season. It's good now bit the cold keeps the group on just these two acres. I want them throughout foraging all the nummys in the woods and in the gardens we made. Spring batch will be once a day feeders. So far we have to feed twice a day. When foraging gets better due to weather, our feed cost will be worth the organic prices of whole/cracked grains.
This time around the prices will barely cover feed and cost of chicks. Mostly due to my newb mistakes in the beginning. Killed 8 in the cold2 we aren't counting due to one with splayed leg - we will eat her and one crook neck that's a farm pullet now, she used her get outta butcher free card by surviving her siblings who are 4 times her size lol

I'm loving the meaties, have 50 more coming Friday! We grow a lot of dark greens in green houses (calcium filled and self seeding pays for next year's crop) and chop and feed with multi organic grains (oats, wheat when we can find someone and alfalfa) I want to get away from big store feed and save cost. Growing a lot of their vitamins has worked wonders as has fermented feed! But I need a non soy non bagged feed protein source. I don't want it effect the great flavor tho. The alfalfa works great but is pretty pricey.
Did y'all know they make diet dog food? I had no clue!!! When did dogs start needing to diet?
