"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

NO...It's frickin colder that a witches nose!!!!! Just sayin...I've been outside taking care of animals and cleaning stalls. It's a glamorous life I lead!

Glad to see you haven't been eaten yet. How are the little fuzzy butts?

It's better then it was last night, and then it will get tonight so I take what I've got this moment as a blessing.

That and that I have kept everyone safe from the cold.

Thanks. Will do. They seems pretty happy right now. There's places they can huddle down, but they're acting normal. I heated some black eyed peas for them and they'll get warm oatmeal this afternoon. I've read a lot about heated waterers on the DYI thread. Up north they have to do lots of winter prep like we have to do here in August and Septemer. I worry so much when they are panting all day, wings out and they are in the shade with fans going.

That's why I have decided on no more black giant breeds. The Langshans and Jersey giants had a much harder time in the summer walking on their legs and panting then my bantams. We don't get cold enough often enough to invest time in the heated waterer but on those cold days it is a wish that we did.
I worry a lot more about mine during the hot summer months – they all are running around in this cold like they don’t feel a thing. I did put extra hay in their coop & we put extra tarps up to help block the wind. The peas were basking in the sun behind their tarp this morning.

Whenever I feel like complaining about how cold it is, I just pull up Ripon, Wisconsin weather & instantly feel warmer! It’s a balmy -19 there right now, with a wind chill of
- 49. Sweet!

Mine were happy to come inside (unheated room) last night and looked at me like I was crazy for sending them out this morning. Now they are running around like they can't even feel it. They can keep all that cold up there we are in the south for a reason!

I have had to split up chores into 15 min intervals because I couldn't feel my fingers anymore. I can't grip anything with gloves on and my lack of grace in all forms means if I can't feel it I am likely to injure it. Best to be safe. On the 2 meat threads the Canadians are talking about it being nice sunny weather but can't handle the heat of our summers, I can't handle their idea of sunny much less their cold.

Saturday I saw 70 degrees coming!

I was surprised too. My free range water was frozen too and the water in the coops had a little ice crust on the edges. Bunny water was fine. The weather won't last. At least in Louisiana the super cold weather never lasts. Unlike summer where super hot/humid torrid weather goes on and on and on and on and on. The girls were fine this morning but tonight I will put Vaseline on their combs. Are you supposed to put it on their wattles too? I've never done that before, but I like Pam's suggestion. I insulated the pipes, but I'm going to add some. Weather is on. 39 high today, but back above freezing by Wednesday. Tonight will be the coldest.

Well, that's a bummer. Looks like it is more humane to kill, I wouldn't want it to suffer because I tried to save it.

I think a coon that big/ old would be able to survive a relocation. It didin't get that big without having a big will to survive. I hope it goes away not to be seen again so you won't have to make that call. Not that I'm a coon lover, something about it made you pause to think save instead of just kill it. Pam

Yes wattles too. I don't think its that cold for a extended time.to need it. But it won't hurt them if it makes you feel better. I guess better safe than sorry. Pam

It's cold.

They are doing better than I am. I have them all inside the house until the cold weather passes. :hide

Looks like only 2 of the 10 "mystery chicks" are going to hatch -shipping was really rough on them, and so far I have 1 BB red phoenix chick! I am really happy. I was hoping for one. I hope it's a rooster. I don't say that often! I suspect the other is silkie or showgirl from the black beak I see through the pip, since those are possible breeds but I won't know until it hatches!
