"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I have never even seen Golden Harvest brand before. I haven't been in a Freds in years either. I have to believe that a good number of people that hate Tattler lids are using them wrong. If you have canned for a long time then doing it the same is a reaction and you have to be careful about the tightness on those lids. I didn't think there were stupid people canning because it is not the easiest thing in the world to do but there are. I have read many reviews on people reusing ball lids (for canning not storage in the fridge) until they refuse to reseal. That is too big of a risk for me both health and money wise. I do huge batches, what would happen if an entire batch failed?
I never reuse the metal ones either. I won't even use the lids that come in the cases of new jars. I only use those for plain storage because they already have a ring imprint on the rubber because they tighten down the rings.

Question: dose any one use paraffin when canning? My grand mother used a lot of it putting up jams and jellies. She canned every thing. She had a room made for storing home caned goods. A couple large canning pots and cases of Ball and Kerr jars. When she died my mother thru all her canning stuff out. I asked her why? She said because I know you wanted it and you would start canning. You can not afford to can. It is cheaper and better in the store.

Besides, "it is a lot of work. I hated canning, you do not want all that work."
No, I do not use paraffin. I do not trust it because I want to be able to store my canned goods for up to 2 years if we don't eat it right away.

That's price is outrageous! my husband always says, "You can't fix stupid"! Lol. But then again, maybe she was trying to save money for if she gets caught. Court costs are high and it's illegal to sell it raw. (I think that is a really dumb law!)

I can't believe someone would be soooo dumb and wasteful !!!! my chiro gets it from a farm in Mississippi I will ask him how much etc. Pam

Oops! Think I sent an empty post. Sorry, I'm learning :) do you or do you know of anyone in the North Shore area that sells poulets? If I can't get hold of any poulets I would try starting with babies.

You can buy at double d feed they get RIR'S ,buff sex links, I bought gold laced Wyandottes there it just depends. In a month or so we will start having chicken swaps in Covington . They have poulets and chicks at the swaps a Variety of breeds. They are held at the fair grounds. Most feed and seeds will have chicks next month. Pam

Is it still illegal if it is sold as "not for human consumption"? I would think there is some sort of backup plan for when a cow doesn't produce enough milk (like too old). I would be willing to take my chances.

:th What was she drinking??? You raise price based on cost, lack of supply, and high demand. If you have enough to pour down the drain then there is room to lower the cost. At the very least she could use it herself...what a waste!
Thought about it but if I do I have to give up overnight and late night events (like camping). My mother is by back up plan for when I have to go out of town and she is willing to care for cows, pigs, and chickens but not a goat. I'd rather have to care for a goat then a big cow.

That women burns me up! Why not make cheese. Dumb dumb!!!

Thank you! Good info. How can I find out the date/time of the swaps? Online google?

THANK YOU, I have gone back to doing more research on small breed cows. Apparently, there popularity is growing do to mini-farms and self reliance movement. They are 36" to 47" high, there is even high butter fat Jersey, and marble meat Angus. They are breed for grass feeding. I find it exciting. :ya Everything I have read says they are more efficient to feed.

A great link http://www.motherearthnews.com/home...-breed-milk-cows.aspx?PageId=2#ArticleContent

Cool! Thanks for the link!

Does anyone feed their chickens shrimp shells? I made shrimp stock and was about to throw out the shells but wondered if chickens can eat them and be ok.

I also made turkey stock and rabbit stock. I think I'm "stocked" up. ;)
