"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Warmed up to 58 & snow's gone! -- it was pretty, it was fun & now we're glad it's gone. It lasted just long enough. Let the chickens out & they had a blast roaming around all day. Now time to go lock them up for the night.

Saw several sets of tracks in the snow around the runs this morning -- coyote -- they came, they tried, they failed, they left. Thanks to good tall strong fences & coops!

Most of the snow is gone here too. It warmed up nicely and the young pullets were happy to be out and run around. The only tracks we saw in the snow were little birdie tracks.

My pair of Bantam Cochins have the sniffle, sneezes. That is very worrisome! And I am not looking forward to the lower temps that are forecast. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are all forecast to be below 25F. ((shiver))

They will be back. Good that you know they were there and that your fences and coop are strong enough to keep them out!

Did you add extra hay or bedding for the cold that came threw? If so don't worry, it would be from the dust of both you putting it in and them settling in it to keep warm.

Hey Jennifer, not yet but I have ordered by chicks. I ordered Sandhill, 5 White Dorkings, 5 New Hampshire, 5 Light Sussex and 5 Blue Americauna w/ 5 assorted heavies to make up the order. Who knows when I'll get delivery , at least May. So I ordered from Meyers 5 Delawares female, 2 male, 5 White rocks female 2 male and assorted roos to make up order. This is coming 3/20 so I'll have to get on the ball by the 1st. Everything else is set up and the heritage birds will stay in storeroom brooder for a month so I've got time. The Meyer order will get me in business. Raising my stock.

Oh yes, they will -- we've had a very strong & active pack for over 30 yrs in our area - but they got me once, years ago -- took out 4 full grown geese in one night - jumped that 6' fence & took them & back over -- it was raining & muddy & tracked them to the bayou the next morning -- only feathers left -- they won't do that again. I no longer raise geese but my chickens are locked up tight every night.

Caught not one fish today, so we came home and worked. Repurposed a 4 shelf metal rack! Now I have 6 hen boxes! Covered the top with a plastic drum cut in half so they can't roost on the top, then separated each shelf in half, ip tied wooden dowels for jumping on to get in, covered the sides and back with wood sheets, and loaded up with bedding... I am going to leave all the hens in the coop again tomorrow to make them get used to it. They only laid two egs again today.... 6 yesterday and 7 the day before....
Was thinking I needed more hen boxes. Reading you guys posts about your hens having their preferred place to lay... figured I would give it a go!

There is a lady in Bossier City who owns goats. She has a sign that says goat farm, and allows schools to give lil kids petting zoo time. She also allows 'pals' to come for a $paid$ tour by appointment only.... if you 'happen' to milk her goat yourself, in your own container while your there, she is clear of any fault. I know it is way around the bush to get what you need but people do DO it.... so you see if you can find an associate who owns goats, and see what wiggling could be possible to agree to... I know, WAY out there... but maybe..
