"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Disturbing Story and Pics. Do not look if you have a weak stomach.

Not so good morning Peeps. A little drama over at my place. Yesterday morning, I walked out to the chicken yard before going to work and I noticed that turkey feathers were all over the place by the gate (before you walk into the chicken yard). I walked around but I didn't find any bodies or injured turkey. So, I went to work with the thought that I would review my camera surveillance tapes when I got back from work. So, I went to work and came back last night and started feeding my animals. While, i was in the chicken yard, my neighbors (that live on the side of me) for 40 years came over carrying a dead turkey. When I saw the turkey, I knew it was the turkey who had the missing feathers. My neighbor told me that they found the turkey on the side road next to my house. I explained to my neighbor about the feathers and I had not had a chance to look at the tape to see what happened. My poor turkey hen was mutilated. I wanted to cry but I was so upset at whatever did this. I immediately stop doing what I was doing and I went inside and sat down in front of the camera monitor. As I replayed the tape from 2-6-2014, I saw happy birds running and walking around the yard. Then I saw everyone take off and start flying around like crazy. I slowed the tape down and I saw the predator. My neighbors dog that lives across the street (not the neighbors that brought over my dead turkey) but other neighbors, got out of his pen, ran across the street, almost got hit by 2 cars and ran into my yard. He got a duck hen first. She was grazing and was startled by him, so she wasn't able to fly away. He "played" with her for about a minute and she tried to get away 2 times but was too injured to fly away. He finished the kill and ran around looking for his next play toy. He then got the turkey hen. He cornered her by the gate and she was not able to fly away. He ripped her feathers out and killed her. Then he ran around looking for his next play toy. He was in my yard less than 5 minutes and killed 2 birds and injured 1 tom turkey. I found the Tom on his side and was not able to get up. I brought him inside and trying to see exactly what is wrong with him. To see my animals being killed and not being able to do anything about it made me feel so helpless. I was outraged at what I was looking at.

I am soooooooooooooo mad right now. I had to call down last night. I didn't go over there last night. I decided to wait until this morning giving me time to calm down. I knocked on their door but no answer. I came back home and wrote them a letter letting them know what happened. I walked over and put it in their mailbox. Their mailbox was full of mail and the box for the newspaper had a couple newspapers in it making it appear that they have been out of town. On the letter, I told them to come over when they got the letter so that we can discuss what happened. If and when they come over (and I hope for their sakes, they come over when they make it back to town) that they don't give me any lip cause then the "Devil's Daughter" will emerge from hiding. If that happens, then I'm sure I will be arrested today because I know my limitations (my temper and my ability to use words to cut a person like a knife and rip their hearts out and make them wish they were dead in a coffin). They really are good neighbors and I have absolutely no complaints about them. I know they have a terrier and I think a border collie and they stay penned up in their back yard. They rarely get out but they have gotten out a time or two and I did take pictures of the dog in my garage.

This is the first time I have had a predator attack and it's a DOG !!!!!!!! Not a coyote or fox or raccoon or any other predator. A DOG !!! The worst kind because it's a game for them. Although I hate that any of my birds were killed but A TURKEY and A DUCK. There is no money that can pay for the loss of my turkey and duck and my tom if he doesn't make it. I'm at a loss for words right now.

Will keep everyone posted on the face to face meeting. I hope it goes well. If not, stayed tuned for the evening and nightly local news. If they say that a lady was arrested for assault in Opelousas, that will be me. :/

I'm thankful that the little devil didn't kill any more animals and I'm thankful that I went shopping on Black Friday last year and bought my camera surveillance system on sale. I advise everyone get one. If I wouldn't have had this camera recording, I would have NEVER EVER EVER known that the neighbor's dog killed my birds and they wouldn't know either.

Oh, Kuntrygirl!!! I am so sad!! I cannot begin to imagine the pain of seeing that film. I hope your neighbors are horrified for so many reasons. Their sympathy would go a little way toward healing. And no one wants good neighbors to become enemies. Bless that camera purchase. At least there is a chance they will make sure it will never happens again and there can be no argument of how it happened. . If I saw a film of my neighbor's dog killing mine I would also have murder in my heart. Please involve the authorities if you don't get some satisfaction from the neighbors. Be sure to know clearly what you want from the neighbors before you talk. I really do not want to hear about you being arrested on the news. My heart goes out to you more than I have words to say.

Thank you.

You know I thought about what you said as far as being sure to know what I want from the neighbors before I talk to them and I don't even know where to start. I'm glad that you mentioned that because I guess I really need to sit down and decide how they can make this wrong right. Although this will NEVER be right in my eyes. Because I can't bring my hens back.

I discussed this on the turkey thread when the conversation was about selling female turkeys and their actual worth. I would say that I will have lost close to $300.00 on the hen. Selling the hens alone is $75.00 per turkey hen.

As far as the duck, I sell my duck eggs (eating) for $5.00 a dozen and they are laying machines. I sell fertile eggs for $15.00 per dozen. They lay for about 8 months = 32 weeks - Average 180 eggs - 15 dozen @ $5.00 = $75.00 for eating eggs. Average 15 dozen for fertile eggs = $225.00. I sell my duck hens for $25.00. I sell the ducklings for $8.00 each. My duck hens can go broody 2 times a year and can hatch at least 25 ducklings ($200.00).

I also use my broodys to hatch pea fowl eggs and goose eggs, so that's another loss, so I won't have those 2 to help with incubating. :hit

There are so many factors in this equation. I don't know where to begin. :hit I hate to put a price on a killing but you have a point. :( I don't want i to look like it's about money but at the end of the day, they are responsible for their dog's actions.

It looks like I have lost about $500.00 as far as eggs and babies and their lives. And that doesn't include my injured tom and if makes it or not. May be 1 less tom to breed with turkey hens for fertilized eggs.

Here is a copy and paste of what I typed back in November 2013.

1 hen = 12 eggs layed each time (estimate - 2 times broody) = 24 eggs. If I chose to let the hen hatch the eggs or if I chose to hatch the eggs in the incubator and I have a 100% hatch rate (and I usually do), the 24 poults are sold @ $12.00 each. 24 poults x $12.00 brings in a profit of $288.00 if I sell the poults within a week . If I keep them any longer, the price increases every week by $1.00 (cost of feeding them). Comparing the amount that I could sell a hen for compared to selling 24 poults minus the amount of feed that 1 hen eats still puts me in the + (positive) because they don't eat that much feed.

If the hen only lays eggs and does not go broody for 3 months and lays (let's just say) 75 eggs and I sell all 75 eggs @ $3.00 each. That hen brings in a $225.00 profit.

This profit ($225.00 to $288.00) is the same that a buyer can make off of the hen that I sell him/her (if that's what they chose to do). Now if I sell 2 hens to this same person and Hen 1 hatches all eggs both times and Hen 2 only lays eggs (based on a 3 month period - my hens layed eggs for 10 month this year ($750.00 worth of eggs for 10 months of egg laying), my profit is $513.00 for 3 egg laying for 3 months).

In addition, my turkeys don't eat a lot. The turkeys like to fly over the fence and come into the human yard and the wooded area and eat grass and bugs.

So the $75.00 that I sell them for is nothing compared to what I can make.

I'm so sorry Kuntrygirl ! Unfortunately the only thing they can do to make things right is to pay for your loses. I wonder who is taken care of there animals while their away? I hope it's not the same lady that you trusted a while back. I think I would make sure their not able to get out again. I'll keep some money aside for bail. My prayers are with you! Pam

I am so sorry this happened to you and your poor birds. I would be breathing fire if a dog did that to my animals. It was hard enough to take loosing pets to a bobcat, but the bobcat was trying to survive. Them dying for a game is so much worse.

Well, I learned that mealworms can stay in refrigerated stasis for a VERY long time. Over a year ago I had gotten some refrigerated mealworms for my daughters gecko and the pet store lady said they would live for 2 weeks. Well after giving a few as treats they got pushed to the dark recesses of the fridge and forgotten for a year until now. I found the cup and was like shoot, oh well the chickens can eat the dead bug and I dumped them on the leftover biscuits I was about to distribute around.... and the worms started moving!!!! Most of them were alive!

Two weeks my batooty!

I don't want to. And once they are old enough to go out to the coop I won't need to because I'll have a screen cover over my fence to keep predators out. That being said right now they are in my house and are trying to fly.
I use bird/deer netting over my brooder when they start to fly. It's plastic, really cheap (7'x100' for $13), and works well. I also have some on the corner of my fence that has access to a path to a main highway just in case.

Kuntrygirl, I am sorry for your loss.

No amount of money will fix the problem and they may think you are nuts with the estimates on your livestock's worth (not owning them themselves). This time I would charge them at least $100 as that is what you would have gotten for selling them. You may consider more for the harm done to your tom. Sit down with them and a printed list of all the costs for raising them and list of what their lifespan will bring to your household (income for selling eggs and birds) so they fully understand what the loss meant beyond emotional loss. Let them know how much this hurt you and if it ever happens again you will be charging them the full worth of each and every animal harmed or killed on your propriety from their animals. They either had a bad caretaker, bad setup, or neglected their responsibilities completely and they should have to do something about it. The fact that they have mail and newspapers stocked up may mean that they don't in fact have a care taker for the dogs. Show them a video so they know and can't dispute the facts as many people choose to deny responsibility otherwise. I hope you never have to deal with this again!

Thanks Pam. I am still upset. I left out this morning to run errands and I noticed the blinds were open. So maybe they were inside after all. I don't know. No one has come over yet, so I'll wait patiently and see what happens. I won't go over there again this weekend because if they got their mail out of the mailbox, then they got the note. I will just wait and get my thoughts together and calm down.

Good question as to who is taking care of their animals. I thought about that as well and thought that maybe the person taking care of their animals accidentally let the dog out. I hope that's not the case but if it is, then oh well.

Thanks for setting that money aside. I hope I won't need it. :(

And yes, I am breathing fire. I think I burned my eyelashes and eyebrows off.

WOW !!! A year in the fridge? That is awesome!

Thank you.

I have been thinking about the cost as well.

If my Tom dies, then I think turkey season is over for me. He is my #1 breeder. If he is hurt, then no breeding. If he dies, then no breeding.

That's a great idea in reference to the lifespan bring to my household. I have been getting things together for when they come over. I'm so upset, I don't know what to do. Seeing that massacre of camera was devastating to me. I will download snap shots from the recording. I will also offer them to see the video of their dog.

I will keep you all posted.
