"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Same here. Thanks . I wish that he could have recovered but I think that he had severe neurological damage. His legs continued to position themselves behind him. He is paralyzed.

And yes my neighbors paid in FULL. I'm so glad. Now it's all in the past and we can continue to be good neighbors. :)

Oh no, I am so sorry about your tom. I'm not sure what happened, but it's good that your neighbor is stepping up.

My chicks finally came!  I got them all settled, one at a time.  I CANNOT believe that there were no flattened chicks in the bottom of the box!!!!  There are 2 of the teeny tiniest little Buff Plymouth Rocks that are iffy at this point.  The worst one drank too much then spit some back up.  Rested for a long time, not even cheeping.  Finally started coming around and at least is looking at food, though I don't think it has eaten any yet.  Wait and see now.  My "extra" chick has feathered legs.  I am going to have to go look at pics to see what it is.  The Golden Polish and the Columbian Plymouth Rocks TAKE THE PRIZE for being the CUTEST!!!

This is great news- I know how worrisome it is when shipped chicks are late arriving. How are the weak ones?

LOL -- my "EX-fiancee" is still living in Nashville. He couldn't wait to get out. I couldn't wait to STAY PUT! I wouldn't even leave to go away to college - I am a graduate of La. College in Pineville.

When I was 10 years old, I used to ride my white mare Lady all over out here. Out of all the places we went, my favorite was the 3 pecan trees in the center of the pasture. I used to ride out there & share a PB&J sandwich with Lady & I swore that some day, I would live on a place just like that.

My Grandfather decided that year to divide up his land among his 8 children. We all gathered at his place & he put the lot numbers of the property into his cap & had each person come up & draw a lot.

When it got to Daddy - who was the youngest - there was one slip of paper left in his cap. Daddy told me to go up and get it.

It was the 10 acres I loved so much. Those 3 pecan trees still stand in my backyard today.

This is one of the best and most heartwarming stories I've heard! It gives me warm fuzzies!

I've had an exhausting couple of days. My husband was injured in an accident at work and burned his right arm when a paint recycler machine spewed out boiling paint. We spent hours in the ER with no one being able to figure out how to remove the paint from the burns. They finally sent him home with lots of meds and an appointment with the burn center at the BR General today. The people who treated him there were amazing. They debrided the burns and said that because he immediately immersed his arm in cool water, he prevented the burns from progressing to 3rd degree. They wrapped him in some new type of bandage that is infused with silver meds and stays put for a week. They said it significantly speeds healing and there will be a big difference when they remove it. Such good news! I still haven't slept, so I'm about to call it an evening.

I spent a few minutes with my turkeys today for some anxiety relief. I just love them!

If you look closely you can see the 2nd hen peeking out from behind the others on the right side. :)

I love that the hens strut sometimes too! They don't let the tom outshine them. :D

So sorry to hear about your husband. That is terrible. I hope that everything works out ok. So sad to hear this. I hope he rested well last night with as little pain as possible. Please keep us posted.

As far as my turkey, I had an attack from the neighbor's dog. He filled a turkey hen and duck hen and injured my Tom Turkey. All of this was caught on my camera surveillance system. I had to go over to the neighbor's house to let them know what happened. She agreed to pay for any damages. I told her that I would settle for $100.00 because I knew that it was an accident. So, she finally paid up. Although I'm sad, I can't bring back my birds, at least they see the importance of keeping "KILLER" locked up. If it happens again, I won't be so nice next time. ;)

YOU GO GIRL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went tonight but I didn't see anything I wanted. Whoops, I mean, I went to buy a heat lamp bulb.

Some guy bought 24 RED pullets. There were A LOT of ducks. That's the LAST thing I need. Many of the bins were not labeled. That was scary. So I quietly exited. Will go back tomorrow though.

For another bulb???

Uh, well yes. :gig

There was only 1bulb in the pack, so I need to bring it back to get that 2nd bulb.

I learned the car stuff from my Dad too. And. Out of need our first cars were klunkers. I even learned to start my car by passing the starter when. I was unable to afford a new one. My dad took me duck hunting and taught me how to use a gun. Etc.

Oh, I also learned to shoot early. I am quite good at that.

:thumbsup

So im considering venturing in to ducks.... Had chickens for years, but never ducks.. what do I need to know? I know ducklings are super messy, but what else? Can I raise them with this years chicks? When grown, can they be housed with the chickens?

1. #1 thing is that they can fly, fly, fly. If you don't want them to fly all over, you will need to clip their wings.
2. Some ducks are seasonal layers while others lay year round.
3. Ducks can multiply like rabbits. Ask me how I know.
4. Ducks are sneaky when they want to become broody. You may find a group of 15 duckilng waiting for you at the gate when you return from work and you have know idea where they came from or how the mama outsmarted you and layed her clutch of eggs in a bush right under your nose in the front yard. Ask me how I know.
5. Ducks are very messy but can be brooded with chicks as long as the brooder is clean and dry as dry can be.
6. Duck eggs are excellent for baking.
7. Yes, you can raise them with this year's chicks.
8. Not sure what your definition of "housed" means but I'm not a fan of keeping ducks penned up. Mine free range and are able to fly all about.
9. Make sure they always have CLEAN, fresh water to bath and swim around in. They need that every single day. Kiddie pools are just find. Just know that as soon as you fill the pool up with clean water, they will poop in it 5 minutes afterwards. :he So don't think you will always have clean water because you won't.
10. They like to dig holes and look for bugs.
11. They poop A LOT.
12. They make a good gumbo. :drool
13. They like a high protein feed but not required.
14. Ducks can hatch any kind of egg you need hatched.
15. They love to eat sewage water and dead carcasses. This can lead to botulism.
16. A feral cat's dropping can kill a duck if the duck ingests it. Cats' poop can pass on (if ingested) what is called Toxoplasmosis - a parasitic disease. This can be passed on to ducks, turkeys, chickens and even rabbits.
17. A duck is excellent when it comes to hiding it's sickness and illness. If you don't know your animal and notice that it is sick, it can die within days.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you! So, you don't keep your ducks penned up at night? My chickens free range during the day, but are locked up at night because of predators.

Yes and no. I have some ducks that will roost (and yes ducks do roost) with the chickens in the chicken coops. For those that are roosting when I go out to close the coops, get locked up. I have other groups that like to roost on top of my peacock pen and chicken coops and chicken house. I have some that roost on the fence and I have some that roost in the trees. I also have some that sleep on the ground. I don't have night predators in my chicken yard, so I don't have a problem with predators. (Unless my neighbors let their dog out to run around and come over to my yard and kill my turkey hen and duck hen during the day time when I am not home and they are not supervising the dog. Oh sorry, I had a flashback from a week or so ago. Sorry about that.)

In your case, I would strongly advise you to lock them up . There is no way possible that I can lock up 100+ ducks. :/

I am pages behind on posts, so if anyone said anything directed towards me in the last few pages, I missed it!

Some fuzzy butt cuteness!!!

One of the "extras" in my shipment. This is the little Dark Brahma roo baby. Well, Brahma at least. The MM website doesn't list them having some of the color variations that are out there, so Dark is the most likely for this guy. He looks like a really chunky guy already. But its just his fuzz, weighs in at 1.0 ounce.

My trio of Dark Cornish LF hens. They are already weighing in just slightly more than most of the other breeds. 1.2oz average this am.

2 White Laced Red Cornish hens. These also are weighing in slightly above the Wyandottes and Rocks.

Rediculous cuteness here!!!! Golden Polish hens......

White Wyandotte hens......doing pretty good this morning. Calm and not too sassy.

Columbian Wyandotte hens.....all doing very well.

2 of the Cornish X babies. Already up to 2 ounces on all but one this am. The hatchery threw in an extra one of these which I think probably had something to do with them all making it. These babies can put off some HEAT!!!!! And they do NOT like being in the box for weight time or pictures, hahaha!!!

I didn't get pictures of the White Plymouth Rock chicks, 3 of them. They are doing good though. A little too big for their britches though!! Already throwing their weight around
roll.png

I didn't want to stress the Buff Plymouth Rocks by having them out for extra time, so I don't have a good pic of them. They are all still alive. But.....I am still not confident on the smallest one. They got some scrambled egg this am and have probiotics and electrolytes in their water. Last night when they were getting settled down to sleep and getting the last of their energy bursts out it was like a mini mosh pit in the brooder. A chick would run back and forth and then run towards the ones that were already getting ready to sleep and just jump right up into the middle. It was the funniest thing I had EVER seen in my life!!! Hilarious!

Tonight or tomorrow morning I am going to move the Cornish X and 4 White Plymouth Rocks that I already had that are about 1 1/2 week old out to a different brooder. I just want to be sure that everyone is doing good before they go to the bigger brood area out in the greenhouse.

dogs are exactly what worries me. My neighbors dogs dug under my chicken pen about a 8 months ago and killed 22 of my chickens.

OUCH! Sorry to hear about that. What did the neighbors have to say about that? Did they make it right with you?

How many dogs do they have? So, they don't keep their dogs locked up?
