"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Im scared of the cold for the baby chicks with Blue :th they went out yesterday, playing in 79 degrees, being one with the mounds of clover! Mama Blue rounded them up in her coop off to the side so kept the meaties out and let her make a big ol hay nest and snuggle in. Too cute. But then...I see low temps- 31 tonight again :( do I need to scoop her and babies up and bring them back to the brooder indoors? It would break my heart to freeze them :(
I do know mama blue is a live fluffy butt heater tho...so if these temps are easy peasy for them I'd hate to stress them chasing them down!

Awwww sorry she didn't make it :'( Hardest part of farming and homesteading for us is the loss :( even tho its nature and we know it can happen, it still hurts to see beautiful baby go. Glad her brother is thriving tho, great job keeping his spirits up, I've read somewhere goats mourn for siblings and parents when there's a loss. I love her name and your reference to her name :) made me smile from the heart
Hi everyone. My internet didn't let me get on BYC for a bit there but it's working right now. Hopefully it stays that way! :fl For those of you unaware it has been a very trying last couple of days. My pigmy goat Lola had her babies the day before yesterday and yesterday one of the twins, the smaller doe I had named Eclipse was unable to thrive and despite fighting tooth and nail for her life I lost her. :hit She was the little black one and her life was brief as an eclipse she was named for. :( :hit Her brother is doing well still, and I'm grateful for that.

I hate losing power :( glad everyone made it! :bun
Next weeks gonna be rough :(
High winds knocked our power out again last night.  I am SO thankful that it just came back on about 1/2 hour ago.

So all my chicks had to go the entire night, last night without heat.  They are all alive.  I hope they all keep doing good as they get warmed back up.  They are kind of hunched up, but not huddling together.  So I guess that is good.  The little ones have a feather duster that they snuggle under, so maybe that helped hold their heat in.

I feel like we dodged a bullet :bow

I'm so sorry you lost Eclipse. My brother has pygmies. One of his nannies, Molly, tried to deliver last week but had complications. He had to bring her to LSU for a section. Molly is fine but they lost both kids. So sad to lose those sweet little ones!
Well, I've finally had my foot stepped on nice and hard by my 1200 pound gelding. Right on my instep, and, for good measure, when I tried to push him off he leaned on me a little more before moving. To his credit, there was another horse tied next to him that was acting up, and he was trying to get out of the line of fire. Can't yell at him when that happens. :/ Now to nurse my swollen, bruised foot. I'm not sure if anything is broken or not. But in good news, I've separated my pekin ducklings from my chicks and the change is astounding. I didn't realize just how loud and messy, though cute, the ducklings were. The chicks are quite mild mannered in comparison.
Ouch!!! Please take care of yourself. I hope nothing is broken!
I know I will miss something I wanted to comment on. Bugglesmommy, so so sad about little Eclipse. It's nice about the little boy. Kuntrygirl, great shot. I was amazed when I killed one a few months ago I shot it straight through the head and still had to shoot it 3 more times to kill it!! Dang. Welcome to LA-yers Catdaddy. We are a nice bunch, hope you hang around. Lol. Seriously, we miss you when you are away. Angel, what a bummer about that sneaky hawk. Under the netting? Really bad!! On a happier note, I love what you do with pallets. Love the peach trees. Thanks to all for the great info from many of you on gardening. I hope to do better this year. My friend with cancer went into the hospital last week. He might get out Monday afternoon. There was a large musical concert put on to benefit him last Saturday. He couldn't attend but listened to it on the phone and I took videos for him that I took over to the hospital on Saturday. No kidding, it was the best concert I have ever been to in my life. A combination of country, blue grass, and blues. All acoustic in the round. Very moving. The doctors said he was too far along for any treatment so he will be going home to die. Myself and other friends are going to try to keep him at home where he wants to be. He is such a great person, I could not be so gracious under his circumstances, but he always thinks of others and tells great funny stories. It'll be a huge loss.
I'm terribly sorry about your friend. It is wonderful that he has an amazing and supportive group surrounding him.
Hope everyone is bracing for this cold weather tonight. it is already 36 degrees here now. SO, I separated the excess roosters from the rest of the flock. They are not happy with me. But, I candled again just before lockdown, and found 9 eggs were dead. The remants of what was inside appeared to be what I saw in pics that showed too many roos/bad regulation of temps. Which is probably true. With that cold snap/warm days we have had, the temps in the house have been hard to regulate since we dont use central air/heat. So I am hopeful for the remaining. It is hard tho, with a still air bator I have to turn the eggs as well by hand. Then with eggs put in every day for the past 18 days, all are at different stages of development. Took me a year, but by last year, I had it down to a science. I am hoping I haven't forgotten some of my tricks. :jumpy
I'm tired of the crazy temp swings. I hope the rest of your eggs make it!

I'm so happy they're okay! I always get nervous when I have eggs in the incubator or chicks in the brooder and a storm comes through.

Here's pics of the chicks from this weekend 3 silver waynddotts , 2 barred rocks, and 2 gold Phoenix chicks. The other photo is a squirrel flinging bird feeder. Can't wait to see it in action.,

Cute chicks! A squirrel flinging bird feeder? Be sure & get a video for us!
Now I'm hearing it's supposed to sleet tonight.
I bet we go straight from this into 100-degrees-in-the-shade summer weather. And you won't hear me complain one bit!
