"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Yup, polycarbonate is non-toxic, so you're good to go. Have you considered hooking up the collection system to provide water to your chickens?

Does anyone raise or grow their own treats/food for their chickens and /or ducks? I'm looking to do this but want to start out with something simple and easy. Any ideas?

I sprout alfalfa and some other seeds, like the ones you can find in a store. and grow sunflowers they love the seeds, Pam

Yes I do think if I didn't do something for shade it would be too hot. But there are trees for afternoon shade. And part of the order I got from FarmTek was 80% shade cloth. They have great prices on remnants. So that is going to be above their area.

As well as the ventilation.....its hard to explain how that's going to work without the pictures, lol. Fans front and back if necessary as well. And the air is going to flow the opposite as well, from under the eve all the way down both sides.

I have.  But if I do then I will have to wait for awhile to get that done.  I will just be glad to save that $$$ for water that we can collect, no matter what we use it for.

Cheap and gravity fed for this coop we use a 35 gallon resivore we fill. It sits on cinder blocks slightly above the height of the cups.
Could easily be fitted properly with a rain collection system.

I agree $8 is very high, and I wouldn't dare pay that much for a hatchery chick (not saying anything against yours.) Pure Rhode Island Reds bred to the Standard are rare and in high demand. There are only two lines in the states known to be pure (and both are very old), one from Illinios and one from Florida. These chicks are a crossing of the two lines, which increased the genetic diversity and improved vigor. The new line is 50 years old itself. If you're not into the whole bloodlines thing I can totally understand seeing the price as ridiculous, but I feel these are really nice birds and I'm willing to pay for quality.

NOW, in the end of they all lay the same thing- an egg, so if you want to view it in the broad spectrum they aren't worth anymore than a mixed breed.

$8 a piece is a good price for such quality like these Mohawk RIR's there are way more expensive one out there for sure. Some Orpintons are skyhigh for what they are IMO but everything good is worth something, I have both hatchery and old timey there is much difference besides the $$ values for sure. all have their places in the wide world of poultry.

That link that is posted above has a diagram with the water barrels on cinder blocks like you said. I showed it to hubby. I think one barrel on each side will be good for now. Where did you get those cups?? I like those! One website I was reading a little while ago said that you shouldn't give the rain water straight to animals or people without making it "potable". Do you do any filtration or anything? Or is that just being over cautious?

So what is a good price for a barrel anyway??? I found these......it seems a bit high. I am really hoping to find some around here that are more reasonable. I just want to be SURE that it hasn't had anything yucky stored in it.
