"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Ok guys. Prim is not moulting. I gave her a close look and her feathers are broken off close to the skin in multiple places. Her crop is red. It is soft and feels normal. Her eggs are still soft. A couple of times she went in the coop with the big girls at night and I let her stay. I think they ganged up on her. I've seen them do it. She's not bleeding and has no broken skin. She's thin. I'll keep her separate, even during the day, I can put up a temp fence. If I get another RIR pullet, is there a chance it will pick on her too? Should I get a chick and spend time helping them bond? I was thinking a docile pullet. What do you think? I really love that hen.

Just wondering. Do you keep all of the different size birds in the same pen or do you have them separated? I'm trying to figure out how to accommodate my bantams but I only have 3 and was considering putting them in with the others just kind of scared to because of them being so much smaller.
my Bantams, the LF Roo and Bannie Roo didn't get along. Both strong willed. So, Bannie Roo began Roosting outside in the trees each night with his girls. Then they would brood somewhere in the woods, and never teach them to come to the coop either. most died from cold or predators. SO, LINDA you may be able to do this as well, I started catching their babies. Keeping them in metal dog kennels putting the plastic floor on the top since LF chickens would get on top and crap on them. Kept them fed and watered, and each morning, sliding flooring back in to transfer them to a spot outside so they had grass etc. Then back inside the coop at night.
Then when I started hatching my own LF babies, I did the same. So I got 3 of them. One for new babies, another for 3 week old, another till they are ready to be 'freed'. Works great!!! LF gets used to them without having access, babies learn to get along as well.
Now, my Bannie hen goes to the coop after foxes killed all my others.

Sometimes mine will pick and peck on another, and I ALWAYS seem to find something is wrong with the one and I think that is why they do it. Survival of the fittest type thing? I would separate her for sure, and get her back to normal. Maybe even get a pullet etc to keep her company? Just look for anything else that may be wrong with her.
Unless you know you have a meaner in the coop?

Thanks. It's easy to separate her. I have two coops and a dog kennel set up as a coop with a perch and nest. I used to keep her in the kennel but the Amercaunas and Black Stars stRted copping themselves together so I started putting Prim in the Amercaunasas coop. She's fine in the dog kennel, it has all the comforts of any coop. I will keep her separate to recover. I was putting her in a separate coop and giving her eggs and other healthy treats. She needs building up. Poor Prim. She is so sweet.

So, regardless of my policy of always taking babies and the Mom and keeping them in a kennel, this time I did not. I thought I'd let her raise them herself.
My only Bannie hatched 10 in April, as ya'll know.
When I got up to refill my beverage at around 6 tonight, BUCKY was tossing a dead chick in the air and catching it like a ball....
Screaming i ran out, and found 3 more in the yard... he ran from me and went after another!!!
I literally almost killed this dog with my bare hands.... He didnt eat them, which I am glad about, but his teeth opened them all up....
So now, Clarice has 6 babies left... and back to my policy I shall be doing things.

NOW, well on Mothers Day, my half Bannie half LF hen hatched 2! But she abandoned her other eggs. The rest hatched in the last 3 days in my bator, BUT she has 2 running around with her too. So that is two kennels. Lord only knows what he would do to the little ones! But she has been free ranging with them since Sunday! Clarice and all her babies have been free ranging since First week in April!!!!
I don't know, BUCKY has never done anything before to any of them but eat eggs he would find. Then what, he needed a play thing?
I am so awfully upset!!!

Can you put a mild buddy in with her to keep her from pining?

When my older hens catch the small ones in thier coop or around them at all its vishious. They will teair them a new one if given the chance. I'm more worried that you have noticed she's lost weight. Try to moniter her to see if an how much she is eating. I moved the smaller ones to one side of the new coop. I thought when I let them out they would go back to the old coop. In the old coop they could see the big hens through a window. I think they are so happy to be away from the bullies they went to the new coop. Pam

Thanks Pam. I'll put her in a separate yard area tomorrow. No rain so that will be good. I can monitor what she's eating.

I have 1 dozen Silkie eggs available but I'll make them 75¢ off because a couple of them might be half Silkie. I know that for sure most of them are pure Silkie but idk which are. So I'll sell the dozen that I have and a couple extra eggs of choice all for $1.75. Who you wants them? Located in Montgomery, LA

I free range and keep them all in the same coop. My bantams are feisty when needed. Once they are laying there are no problems, however any pullets of any size can have a little pecking done to them before they start laying.
